Ayr State High School BYOx 2015 Parent Presentation
Session Aims Explain the benefits of BYOx Outline the operation of the BYOx program at Ayr SHS Explain the use of vendor portals Outline the location of additional information Provide a forum to ask questions about BYOx Distribute BYOx Charter and Agreement Form
Why consider BYOx?
What is BYOx? Bring Your Own ‘x’ ( BYOx) is a term used to describe a digital device ownership model where students or staff use their personally-owned mobile devices to access the information and communication (ICT) network at Ayr State High School. It is a contemporary learning model that gives parents and students greater choice in device, functionality and budget.
The ‘x’ in BYOx refers to: the device the software the applications the connectivity or carriage service
Why BYOx? BYOx aims to achieve: • development of skills for 21st century • responsible digital citizenship • the opportunity to • investigate, create and communicate using information communication technologies (ICTs) • operate with ICTs effectively and efficiently • engagement in learning • access to information anytime and anywhere • maximisation of opportunity for success in school and beyond
Specific benefits may include: personalised learning improved collaboration greater choice and independence for students increased enthusiasm for lifelong learning seamless integration of technology between home and school 24/7 access to learning increased access to online instructional materials
How will BYOx work at Ayr State High School?
The Technical Solution The Department of Education, Training and Employment has developed a system that allows safe access to the school network using the student’s own device. This system has a range of benefits including: confirmation of anti-virus software on BYOx laptop devices • • self-service connectivity to school network management of student BYOx devices (including isolation of clients to • prevent sharing of files between multiple BYOx devices) restriction of unauthorised access by securing the school wireless network • transparent proxy authentication to simplify sign-on for Internet browsing • and web based applications simplified process for managing visitor and guest access to the school • wireless network compatibility with the department’s enterprise platform . •
How are the devices used in the classroom? ICT is represented in the Australian Curriculum as a general capability: “ Students develop ICT capability as they learn to use ICT effectively and appropriately to access, create and communicate information and ideas, solve problems work collaboratively in all learning areas at school, and in their lives beyond school ICT capability involves students in learning to make the most of the technologies available to them, adapting to new ways of doing things as technologies evolve and limiting the risks to themselves and others in a digital environment .” (ACARA: v7.2)
Are students more distracted by having their own devices in school? Devices can only be used in class at the teacher’s discretion Devices are to be used in line with the Acceptable use of ICT and Responsible Behaviour policies Use of laptops during breaks is restricted to the resource centre
School vision In order to achieve “Opportunities for success and excellence for all ” Ayr SHS believes learning should be: Accessible - where opportunities for learning exist - any place, any time Appropriate - where curriculum, teaching and tools are current and relevant Adaptive - where teaching and learning reflect the needs of the individual student
Benefits of the BYOx Program at Ayr SHS Once the BYOx device is connected to the network, students will be able to: Access home and shared drives on the school network Access school printers Access the internet (filtering applies) Access school software Use the device securely via the application of anti-virus software
Accessing School Drives and Printers Connection to BYOx network Access to drives/printers managed via an app installed on the device (Windows/Mac only) Access to school drives/printers possible on-site only
Internet access on the school’s network User authentication required (user name and password) ‘Galactic’ filtering allows filters to be applied at a very specific level. Schools are able to match appropriate web content to different year levels and users. School level access restrictions apply.
Software Installation Under the BYOx program, a range of software can be installed on the student’s device free of charge, including: MS Office (includes Word, Excel, Publisher, Powerpoint, Outlook, Access, OneNote etc) Adobe Suite (includes Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Edge, InDesign etc) Autodesk (includes Revit, Inventor, Autocad etc) Numerous other software packages. Symantec Antivirus is purchasable by parents for a subsidized price of $10 per year (details on website) due to a deal brokered by the department.
Device selection model Minimum Specifications are : Processor minimum Core i3 (or newer Pentiums) Memory minimum 4GB RAM Hard Drive minimum 500GB HDD or 128GB SSD Minimum 1 x USB port Battery life minimum 4 hours Platform Windows 7; Mac OS X Wireless functionality, charger, Other protective case, keyboard, headphone Features port
Technical Support Technical support will be limited to: • Connectivity problems • School software installation procedures • First point of contact for troubleshooting
Equity Those students who do not have their own device will be able to access mobile laptop trolleys 3 full sized computer labs 2 mini labs Additionally, Year 10-12 students with a need for specialised curriculum software can apply to participate in the take-home laptop program (limited devices available)
Take-Home Laptop Program Applications will be considered based on a need to student needs as there is now a limited number of devices which students can access. The following factors will be used to determine an equitable distribution of take-home laptop devices: Need to access specialised curriculum software in Year 10-12 Previous participation in the program with evidence of a high level of care taken of the device Evidence of take-home laptop being regularly brought to school for use in class Limited or no access to a computer at home that allows completion of school work No broadband connection at home Multiple siblings at school (financial burden for the family to supply laptops for each child)
Use of Vendor Portals
Vendor Portals What is a portal? A portal is a means of collecting information from different sources and creating a single point of access to information. What are Vendor Portals? Vendors (or suppliers) of laptops have created customised sites that bring together information about digital devices that suit the needs of the Ayr State High School community. Examples BES – https://www.besonline.com.au/ayrshsbyod Dell – https://myschoolshop.qld.datacom.com.au/ayrshs Harvey Norman/Acer – https://www.harveynormanbusiness.com.au/welcome NextByte – Price list available on website.
Student and Parent Responsibilities
Device use Before BYOx devices can be connected to the network, parents and students must: • read and understand the school’s Responsible Behaviour Plan • endorse the acceptable ICT use agreement • attend a BYOx induction session • read and sign the BYOx charter
Internet access when not on the school’s network home access is determined by the parent/family school filters do not apply when not on the school’s network
Device security, theft and damage Parents and students are responsible for device security, care and maintenance so parents need to consider factors such as: Virus protection is mandatory for connection to the school’s network. For example, DETE agreement with Symantec for $10/year. https://students.learningplace.eq.edu.au/middle/Pages/default.as px protective bag/case storage when not in use Limited locker storage space at school Students must supply a lock and two keys to access locker storage accidental damage insurance theft and loss insurance
Data Security St udents are responsible for their own data Students are encouraged to save their work to multiple devices to be safe. Data should be backed up to such devices as a USB drive or an external USB storage drive There is always provision for students to store data on their school H: drive
Warranty While research shows that students take much better care of a device which belongs to them than a school provided device, accidents do happen. Warranty will depend on the BYOx model chosen, where the device was purchased and what arrangements have been established with the vendor. A three-year warranty is recommended but warranty terms may vary Ask about Accidental Damage Protection (ADP) Ask about repairs – Return to Base (RTB), onsite repair or ‘ hotswap ’
