AVOIDING LIGHTING PROBLEMS BEFORE THEY ARE INSTALLED WALL WASHING vs. ADJUSTABLE ACCENTS • Wall Washers • Wall washing is a very effective way of making a room feel open and bright due to the reflected (indirect) lighting it provides into a space. • Are you really trying to “wall wash” or are you trying to highlight artwork? • Spacing criteria is very easy…essentially a 1:1 ratio of distance out from a wall and distance apart…can be stretched to 1.5:1 if needed. • However, it requires (what looks like) more fixtures to do it correctly. • Based on “normal” framing, this means fixtures would be placed 32” apart from each other…every other ceiling joist bay AMERICAN LIGHTING ASSOCIATION CLC SEMINAR 09/24/18
AVOIDING LIGHTING PROBLEMS BEFORE THEY ARE INSTALLED WALL WASHING vs. ADJUSTABLE ACCENTS • Wall Washers • 24” out from a wall…fixtures can be placed anywhere from 24” to 32” apart from each other. • 36” out from a wall…fixtures can be placed anywhere from 36” to 45” apart from each other. • Any farther from the walls than 36”, wall washers are not recommended because the light level drops off precipitously. AVOIDING LIGHTING PROBLEMS BEFORE THEY ARE INSTALLED WALL WASHING vs. ADJUSTABLE ACCENTS • Adjustable Accents • Adjustable accents are the most versatile fixture type… • Can be used as downlights, “wall washers” or to specifically highlight artwork/objects. • Using adjustable accents in most locations can be very helpful to deal with changes in use of room or unexpected ceiling conditions. • Does the adjustability happen inside the fixture or does it stop the fixture from really being a recessed light? • Internal adjustment vs. gimbal ring AMERICAN LIGHTING ASSOCIATION CLC SEMINAR 09/24/18

AVOIDING LIGHTING PROBLEMS BEFORE THEY ARE INSTALLED ISSUE #3: DIMMING LED FIXTURES AND LAMPS AMERICAN LIGHTING ASSOCIATION CLC SEMINAR 09/24/18
AVOIDING LIGHTING PROBLEMS BEFORE THEY ARE INSTALLED DIMMING LED FIXTURES AND LAMPS • Explain the differences to Clients…LEDs are NOT incandescent and will not “act” exactly the same as what they are used to… • Benefits of staying with a constant CCT as opposed to “warm dim” • How low is low? • How to deal with flickering light sources • Is 5% actually 5% or is it 5% of “perceived brightness” • 5% OF 650 lumens is a lot different than 5% of 1100 lumens AMERICAN LIGHTING ASSOCIATION CLC SEMINAR 09/24/18
AVOIDING LIGHTING PROBLEMS BEFORE THEY ARE INSTALLED DIMMING LED FIXTURES AND LAMPS • ALL LED fixtures and light sources dim differently…some good, some bad • Different “languages”…ELV, MLV, Forward Phase, Reverse Phase, 0 -10V • Dimmer style MUST match what is required by the LED manufacturer • Will it flicker? Will it hum? • If it’s not tested or listed, can you use it? • When in doubt, read the dimming performance listed by the fixture or LED manufacturer. AVOIDING LIGHTING PROBLEMS BEFORE THEY ARE INSTALLED COVE LIGHTING AMERICAN LIGHTING ASSOCIATION CLC SEMINAR 09/24/18
AVOIDING LIGHTING PROBLEMS BEFORE THEY ARE INSTALLED COVE LIGHTING • Cove lighting is only successful if minimum distances are provided in the architectural details… • Most critical distance is the shortest distance from the cove light to the first surface it hits (wall or ceiling) • The greater the distance, the better the spread and the better the effect. Smaller distances (6” or less) will never provide a soft, even • effect • Determine whether the lighting is meant to be a soft, low level accent or a “performance” cove. AMERICAN LIGHTING ASSOCIATION CLC SEMINAR 09/24/18
AVOIDING LIGHTING PROBLEMS BEFORE THEY ARE INSTALLED COVE LIGHTING Performance coves are typically going to… • • be larger rooms with higher ceilings • have greater distance between fixture and ceiling • require higher lumen outputs (600 lumens per foot) • be line voltage cove lights with integral drivers AMERICAN LIGHTING ASSOCIATION CLC SEMINAR 09/24/18
AVOIDING LIGHTING PROBLEMS BEFORE THEY ARE INSTALLED COVE LIGHTING Accent (only) coves are typically going to… • • be smaller rooms or areas with lower ceilings • have minimal distance between fixture and ceiling • require lower lumen outputs (200-300 lumens per foot) • be low voltage cove lights with remote drivers AMERICAN LIGHTING ASSOCIATION CLC SEMINAR 09/24/18
