  4. The AVID System in FSD #145 ● ALL 4th graders at Blackhawk, Center, Empire, Lincoln-Douglas, and Taylor Park are introduced to WICOR skills, with an emphasis on Inquiry and Organization ● ALL 5th and 6th grades at CSMS and FMS build upon their WICOR skills and use them to support their content learning. Increasing emphasis is placed upon reflective writing, inquiry, and collaboration skills. ● 7th-12th grade students have the opportunity to interview to be in the AVID Elective Class. ALL students benefit from having Trained AVID Site Members modeling WICOR strategies as their content teachers, school counselors, and administrators. The AVID elective class uses the national AVID Weeks at a Glance curriculum to assure college readiness. Currently 125 high school students and 102 middle level students are enrolled in the AVID elective.

  5. Evolving and Increasing Rigor ● Our 7th -12th grade AVID Sites (FMS, CSMS, and FHS) have converted to using the new and more rigorous Certification and Coaching Instrument (CCI) tool to measure our implementation ● 5 AVID Elementary Sites piloted the new Elementary Certification and Coaching Instrument which increases rigor and expectations for implementation at the elementary grade levels ● ALL FSD AVID elective teachers are using the national Weeks at a Glance AVID curriculum which is continuously reviewed to assure that it meets the college readiness needs of students nationwide ● ALL AVID 7th graders are now being included in practice collegiate testing, as opposed to only 8th graders previously

  15. Elective Teacher Perspective: mrs. Evans My Experiences: Avid has opened my eyes to a new way of teaching. My background, as a PE teacher, was not classroom oriented. AVID has not only given me classroom strategies to help the students achieve and grow, but it has also given me a platform to help build relationships with the students that I work with on a daily basis. I am forever changed as a teacher because of AVID. Favorite WICOR Strategy: My favorite wicor strategies are socratic seminars and philosophical chairs. I love getting kids involved in discussions about articles and current topics. I love empowering kids to voice their opinions and providing a safe place for them to have discussions.

  16. Supporting 7th & 8th Grade Students ● Students elect to join the AVID class to continue developing their skills in 5 key areas: Writing Inquiry Collaboration Organization and Reading ● Students commit to their AVID contract and to taking the most rigorous classes appropriate to the student (honors) ● The tutorial process (like college study groups) is taught and utilized twice each week. ● Cornell Note taking and overall organization are assessed weekly ● All students participate in practice collegiate testing and high school planning

  23. From a Student Perspective Nylasha Elijah Mario

  24. Student Perspective: Elijah If I had AVID in Fourth Grade: ● Could have been more organized, and kept up with more things ● Had less missing assignments ● Would have understood algebra better ● Not get into as much trouble as I did ● Enjoyed my classes more (maybe)

  25. Student Perspective: Mario How AVID is helping me: AVID is helping me to try and better my college experience and visualize how college will be. AVID also helps me with support from my teacher, who is constantly having conversations with me about applying to college and my grades. How AVID would have helped me if I had it in fourth grade: I think AVID would have possibly helped with my learning experience in note taking, learning logs, and binder checks. “I believe if I didn’t have AVID or sports And the people that surround me, I wouldn’t be as focused as I am now.”

  26. Student Perspective: Nylasha How AVID is helping me: AVID is helping me with my organization and my communication skills. Through AVID I have learned to ask questions effectively and to organize my papers, scholarships, and worksheets accordingly. How AVID would have helped me if I had it in fourth grade: If I were to have had access to AVID in the fourth grade it would have helped me a lot with my organization and with better time management. I think I would have thought about my path long term instead of waiting until eighth grade. “If it wasn’t for my family And the relationships that I have created with the ones around me, I wouldn’t be the young lady I am today.”

  27. From a Student Perspective Areich “I want to use my education to help me to be the best filmmaker.” “ Dawn “I want to use my education to become an educator and impact the Future by teaching young children moral skills and standard math and reading skills.”
