What is AVID? AVID stands for “Advancement Via Individual Determination” It is a college-readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll in four-year colleges by preparing students with the skills necessary to be successful. It was established more than 30 years ago, AVID today impacts more than 800,000 students in 44 states and 16 other countries .

Impact on AVID Students Highlights from AVID Research: AVID sends one third more students to four-year colleges than the local and national average. African American AVID students, whether they participate in AVID for one or three years, are enrolling in college at rates which are considerably higher than the local and national average. AVID students are staying in college once they enroll; 89% of those who started are in college two years later. In short, the capital that students bring with them into the program does not seem to be as important as the capital that the students accrue while they are in the program.
