  3. A leading organisation in powered sport flying c . 7,800 members Administers c.2,700 aircraft on Permits to Fly on behalf of the CAA 1,600 Home-Build or Restoration Projects THE BIGGEST SINGLE FLYING FLEET IN THE UK! Kit agents’ & manufacturers’ seminar February 2016

  4. What is General Aviation (GA)? General Aviation (GA), covers all civil aircraft activity other than that carried out by the commercial air transport (CAT) sector. It is the largest part of the UK aviation community. Kit agents’ & manufacturers’ seminar February 2016

  5. What is General Aviation (GA)? The CAT sector operates about 900 aircraft and uses 25 airports. The GA fleet exceeds 21,000 aircraft, including helicopters, gliders, microlights and balloons. Flown by more than 32,000 pilots. They use around 140 aerodromes licensed by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and between 400 and 500 unlicensed flying sites. 6. DfT GA Strategy and associated research has highlighted the value of General Aviation to the UK economy as in excess of £3 billion. GA directly supports over 10,000 jobs and • indirectly, a further 30,000. In Gross Value Added terms, this total includes • £1.1 billion from GA flying operations. Plus £1.1 billion earned from the export • component of GA manufacturing. Wider benefits deriving from the use of business • aviation earn at least £0.8 billion . 7. Maintaining access to a national network of general aviation airfields is vital to the continuing success of the general aviation industry The provision of a viable nationwide transport • infrastructure. Ninety-six per cent of city pairs served by general and • business aviation have no scheduled flight connections. Access to aviation for pilot training, sport and leisure. • The aerodrome network supports multiple roles: Emergency and medical services, business travel, pilot training for future airline recruitment, open spaces for social and leisure activities. Kit agents’ & manufacturers’ seminar February 2016

  8. Different aspects of General Aviation operate from different types of aerodromes and airports. A larger regional airport may host business jets, • but may not encourage light aircraft or flying training. Smaller aerodromes, which cannot handle larger • business aircraft, are therefore equally important not only in terms of regional connectivity, but also in terms of local amenity. They offer a greater diversity of aviation activity • including flying training and access to sport aviation. Kit agents’ & manufacturers’ seminar February 2016

  9. Many airfields are being recognised as an important ‘open green space’ by Local Planning Authorities. Increasing evidence from local nature and environmental surveys that airfields are increasingly important as a low-insecticide, low-herbicide, sanctuary for plants, insects and associated wildlife . Kit agents’ & manufacturers’ seminar February 2016

  10. British Gliding Association 7000 people flying 2300 aircraft and ½ million movements pa 80 sport gliding airfields in the UK From the North of Scotland to the SW tip of England 40% are directly owned by gliding clubs

  11. Gliding and other airfield challenges Commercial weight behind property developers Unfettered, unmanaged, aspirational expansion of controlled airspace

  12. Finally…the Repeal Bill Likely to result in the UK retaining older disproportionate versions of EU regulation rather than those currently under development for GA with lighter touch. Kit agents’ & manufacturers’ seminar February 2016
