Basic Life Support EMTs who provide basic support such as simple airway opening, breathing support, CPR, splint fracture, bleeding control, defibrillation Advanced Life Support Paramedics who provide advanced support function as the eyes and ears of an emergency room physician. Advanced skills include advanced airway control and management, drug therapy, fluid replacement, 12 Lead cardiac interpretation
In the beginning - all Lee County Fire Departments provided Basic Life Support except Fort Myers Beach and Lehigh (both do ALS transport) 1992 – Automatic External Defibrillators utilized by fire departments Late 1990’s – LCEMS requests fire departments to consider ALS non- transport support
March 1999 – ALS Non-transport begins Sanibel Fire and Rescue District Bonita Springs Fire District Today – 10 Fire Districts provide this service 5 of these Fire Districts function under LCEMS’ Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (COPCN)
Captiva FD - average response time 2:58 LCEMS -average response time 15:42 Medic 5 stationed at Sanibel FD #1 Sanibel FD – provides mutual aid from Sanibel Station #2 When Medic 5 is on an emergency response on Sanibel or Captiva a stand-by EMS unit is sent to Sanibel Station # 1 to cover other calls

Certificate of Public Necessity and Convenience Fire Department Administration selection of personnel for paramedic training. Training center coordination for the personnel selected. Set goal of completion time frame. EMS Officer needed to administer program and to participate on Lee County Medical Care Council
