6 The 4 functions of IPBES IPBES was established with four agreed functions: M A N A A K I W H E N U A – L A N D C A R E R E S E A R C H Deliver global, regional, methodological and thematic Assessment • assessments on biodiversity and ecosystem services - Identify policy relevant tools/methodologies, Policy • support - facilitate their use, and catalyse their further tools development Identify and meeting priority capacity needs of IPBES Capacity • members, experts, stakeholders building Knowledge • Identify and communicate gaps in knowledge 1 8 /1 0 /2 0 1 8 generation
7 A bit of terminology Assessment is a critical evaluation of knowledge for a specific theme or region (e.g. peer- reviewed literature or grey literature). M A N A A K I W H E N U A – L A N D C A R E R E S E A R C H It involves analysing, synthesising and critically judging available information. Confidence terms are assigned to key messages (Executive summaries and summary for policy makers) 1 8 /1 0 /2 0 1 8
8 Assigning Confidence terms • Qualitative information: the 4-box model (similar to IPCC) M A N A A K I W H E N U A – L A N D C A R E R E S E A R C H 1 8 /1 0 /2 0 1 8
