  2. ABOUT AMERICAN PROFICIENCY INSTITUTE • American Proficiency Institute (API) began in 1990 providing Proficiency Testing (PT) to clinical laboratories • Serves over 17,000 customers with clinical PT • Introduced a PT program for food laboratories in 1999 • Provides food chemistry and food microbiology PT • Today, API provides food PT to over 600 customers worldwide • API PT is performed in over 40 countries • ISO/IEC 17043:2010 Accreditation by A2LA

  3. WHERE IS API? Traverse City, MI

  4. WHAT IS PT? HOW DOES IT WORK? • PT is external quality control to measure accuracy • Samples are sent to subscribers on a predetermined schedule • Participants prepare samples according to provided instructions • Participants test samples according to the protocol used in their lab • Results are submitted to API using paper result forms or online using our Paperless Proficiency Testing feature • PT is graded and evaluations are sent to all participants

  19. API PROGRAM NEWS The USDA issued a mandate that beginning June 4, 2012, all laboratories are required to test for the “Big 6” E.coli non- O157:H7 STECs. API has implemented an educational series for the Big 6 and will offer this program in 2013. API is always expanding and improving programs to fit your needs. Contact us if you are interested in any organisms not listed in our catalog.

  26. GRADING Qualitative Statistics Qualitative Grading • Consensus result is typically • Consensus based on the either “present” or values reported by “absent”, based on participants and also participant responses compared to the known or • Participant result is reference values established compared to consensus by the sample manufacturer result • Result is determined to be Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory

  27. GRADING Quantitative Statistics Quantitative Grading • Based on the recommended • Consensus value used for method of analysis in ISO/IEC calculation of each 17043:2010, ISO 13528:2005, laboratory’s z score: and reference documents z score = your result – comparison group mean comparison group standard deviation • Robust statistical techniques • Performance is based on z used to identify extreme scores according to the results and outliers following scheme: • Calculation of a consensus z score ≤ 2.0 = Satisfactory value for grading, usually a 2.0 < z score < 3.0 = Questionable mean z score ≥ 3.0 = Unsatisfactory

  28. EVALUATION REPORTS Performance Summary - summary of a laboratory’s performance over a period of time up to three test events

  29. EVALUATION REPORTS Comparative Evaluation - the result reported by the participant, the test method used, the consensus result, z- score, and the lab’s performance
