  1. Happy International Women’s Day! To celebrate, some of our wonderful History Ambassadors have made slides about inspirational and influential women of the past 100 years. As you hear about these women, think about who you think is the most influential woman and why.

  2. Women of the 20 th Century-Amelia Earhart Born July 24 1897 Death July 2 1937 (?) Amelia Earhart was an American Aviator. She became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, and the first person ever to fly solo from Hawaii to the U.S. mainland. During one of her flights, Amelia strangely disappeared somewhere over the Atlantic in 1937. She and the plane were never found and even though it was a long time ago, her disappearance is still a mystery. Being the first female pilot, she was an inspiration to many women.

  3. Dame Judi Dench Born: 9 January 1934 Judi Dench is best known as an Oscar-winning actress, who has starred in many films and plays. She has supported masses of causes over the time that she has been relevant. Examples of these causes are: Abuse, AIDS & HIV, cancer, depression and suicide, gender equality and poverty. On top of this, she has also been involved with numerous charities, including, Children Of Peace, Cancer Research UK, Epilepsy Action and Human Rights Watch. All the work that she’s done and the charities that she’s helped to support, have improved many peoples’ lives and has made research possible to find ways of curing diseases such as cancer. She’s very aware of illnesses and causes that urgently need to be addressed and she helps to bring to light to these problems, so that others can be aware of the impact they can make.

  4. Margaret Thatcher Born: 13 th October 1925 Died: 8 th April 2013 Margaret Thatcher become the world’s first female prime minister. She served as prime minister from 1979-1990: for 11 years and 209 days. She was a controversial prime minister. She was the leader of the Conservative party. She also had two children – Mark Thatcher and Carol Thatcher. She was best known for cutting social welfare programs, reducing trade union power and privatising certain industries. She was important as it proved that women could be successful and that there shouldn’t be a man ruled society.

  5. Emmeline Pankhurst Born: 15 th July 1858 Died: 14 th June 1928 Emmeline Pankhurst was the leader of the British Suffragette movement. She helped women get the right to vote. She was married to a man called Richard Pankhurst. Emmeline Pankhurst was arrested on quite a few occasions and went on a hunger strike. This meant she was released from prison so that she could recover to health, as the government didn’t want people dying in prison. This would give them a bad reputation.

  6. Clare Hollingworth Born: 10 th October 1911 Died: 10 th January 2017 Clare Hollingworth was an English journalist and author. She was the first news-reporter o report the out-break of World War 2 in 1939. She reported the decisions that led to was and the events of the war. She also reported the mass of casualties that were lost in the epic fight to stop Adolf Hitler and his unstoppable army. Also she had a big role in the war because every part of information was key for the British to stop the Germans and we can thank her for helping us to win the war.
