What are Academic Intervention Services (AIS) • Services that help students who are struggling to achieve the learning standards in English language arts, mathematics in grades K-12 and/or science in grades 4-12. – Extra instructional time – Support services
Eligibility Determination How is AIS decided? • Grades 4, 5, and 6: A student scores below the state indicated median scale score NYS Reading and Math assessment • Grades 2 and 3: A student scores in the bottom 20% of i-Ready • DRA or BAS when necessary • The classroom teacher determines that the student is at risk of not meeting state standards
State Designated Performance Levels • Each year the assessments have four levels of performance • 1 - well below proficient • 2 - partially proficient • 3 - proficient • 4 - above the expectations of the grade level • State determines a median scale score between Level 2 and 3
iReady Testing ● Administered 3 times a year - September, January, May ● Measures performance levels and growth for ELA and math ○ Red - 2 or more grade levels below ○ Yellow - 1 grade level below ○ Green - on or above grade level
How is AIS delivered? • FLIP • Reading Rooms • Specialized Support • After school homework support may be available for eligible students
FLIP Focused Learning Instructional Period This daily, 40 minute period, will allow students to work in small groups on the math and ELA skills that they need to improve. In addition, this period will also provide enrichment opportunities to students that are already meeting the current state benchmarks .
FLIP Focused Learning Instructional Period (cont.) ● Groups change every 20 days ● ELA groups may cover: comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, writing, phonics, word study, fluency and stamina ● Math groups may cover: basic fact fluency, reinforcement of current curriculum content, problem solving ● STEM - possible grouping to be made available
Reading Rooms ● For those students reading significantly below grade level in grades 2, 3 and 4 ● Intensified, targeted instruction within a smaller group ● 1 hour 20 minutes of instruction daily for 8 or more weeks ● Students may be progress monitored as part of the RtI process
Specialized Support ● Grade 4 - Math ● Grade 5 and 6 - ELA ❖ Smaller class size allows for more individualized instruction while receiving the grade level curriculum. ❖ Staffed by the reading specialists, math specialist, ENL specialists and teaching assistant.
