Aims and organization Specific aims of the society Central activities The Society’s publication Membership and organization Affiliations Contact The Antonio de Noli Academic Society (for brevity, ADENOLIAS) is an international and interdisciplinary scientific-research activity formed by scholars and institutions with cultural interest or academic production pursuing: Biographical, geographic-historical, naval-historical, archaeological, social-anthropological, and sociological studies around the discoveries of Antonio de Noli - the Genoese navigator with family origins in the ancient Noli - and the societies and institutions which ensued in the aftermath of the discoveries in which he participated. This activity is solely scientific, educational and cultural purposes and it is devoid of pecuniary intent. By manifestly choosing the scientific perspective, the society wishes to emphasize the fact-oriented character of the research that members of the society conduct and promote. Specific aims of the society are 1. To conduct and promote research on historic and biographic aspects around the Genoese navigator Antonio de Noli, a discoverer of Cape Verde Islands. Emphasis will be done in those themes which deserve further historic clarification or have raised controversy in the absence of facts or in their interpretation. 2. To conduct and promote research on the impact the discoveries of navigator de Noli and his Italian counterparts in the XV century had on the archipelago of Cape Verde and other territories, for Europe, and for the New World. 3. To conduct and promote research on the societal institutions and socio-political structures in the early colonization processes and that were generated by the

  2. discoveries. These include for instance, the study of the development of slavery as means of production and enterprises of slave trade, analyses of cultural developments (such as the Creole culture), and the study of sociological and socio-anthropological factors in the base of the cultural-identity formation of the new nations, with emphasis in the inhabitants own values and cultural production. The promoting of the aims above are served at the society by means of • Partly by the own research of its scholarly members • Partly by the engagement of its members in educational activities, conferences, lectures, etc. • Partly by the institution of a bi-annual research prize for novel works on the subjects as above • Partly through the institution of a honorary distinction to confer upon official or private personalities which in a valuable fashion have endorsed the activities of the society Publication • The society keeps the publication on-line of a bi-annual Research Bulletin of the Antonio de Noli Academic Society. The Research Bulletin will be published in English and Italian and the first issue due to April/June 2010. As resources would permit, it will be published also in Portuguese and Spanish. • It will establish collaboration and/or partnership with other publications Membership and organization • Research members • Honorary members • Institutional members (representing governmental offices or institutions, id. Regions or Municipalities, Cultural or Educational institutions. • Supporting members • Executive board of seven directors (can be integrated by research as well as honorary members), a Chairman of the board (President of the society) and two Vice-Chairman (Research & Publication, and Cultural Relations, respectively) Affiliations • The Antonio de Noli Academic Society will seek affiliation with universities, research centres, government official representations, research libraries and archives, and regional or municipal institutions that would consider the research activities of the society as relevant for their own cultural purposes.
