  1. AEP OHIO Automated Benchmarking Program

  2. Introductions • Rick Sullivan, AEP Ohio – Program Lead • Alex Burke, JadeTrack – Program Manager

  3. What is ENERGY STAR? • EPA voluntary climate protection partnership with energy users, service, and product providers • Brand recognition: >90% of American • Helps organizations – Measure, track, and improve energy performance – Save energy, money, while reducing environmental impact

  4. The biggest little label in energy efficiency For over 25 years, EPA’s ENERGY STAR program has identified the most energy-efficient products, buildings, plants, and new homes – all based on the government- backed standards. Today, every ENERGY STAR label is verified by a rigorous third-party certification process. 5.5 billion 28,500 1,377 1.6 million buildings Wastewater Treatment products homes Plants

  5. Consumers trust ENERGY STAR

  6. Why focus on buildings and plants? • Commercial buildings and industrial facilities generate about 45 percent of U.S. carbon dioxide emissions. • 30 percent of energy consumed in commercial and industrial buildings is wasted. Reductions of 10 percent or more in energy use • can be possible with little or no cost. – Energy is a controllable cost. – Energy is a significant percentage of your operating costs and reduces operating profit. – Any costs you shift from energy cost improve the bottom line. 6

  7. What is Portfolio Manager? • No-cost, secure, online tool to track energy, water, and waste • Benchmark the energy use of all buildings–receive an energy use intensity (EUI) • Many buildings can receive an ENERGY STAR energy performance score on a (1-100 scale) 1 to 100 ENERGY STAR Scale Superior Energy Management, Eligible for certification National Average 1 50 75 100

  8. Benchmarking with ENERGY STAR – the industry standard Buildings Benchmarked in EPA’s Portfolio Manager 450,000+ properties (Cumulative 2001–2015) benchmarking energy use 45,000 500,000 450,000 40%+ of U.S. commercial 40,000 building space 400,000 35,000 Floor Space (Million Square Feet) 350,000 Buildings Benchmarked 30,000 110,000+ properties 300,000 benchmark water use 25,000 250,000 20,000 200,000 200,000+ properties 15,000 benchmark energy/water 150,000 10,000 using web services 100,000 5,000 50,000 28,500+ ENERGY STAR 0 0 certified properties '01 '02 '03 '04 '05 '06 '07 '08 '09 '10 '11 '12 '13 '14 '15 Cumulative buildings benchmarked Cumulative Floor Space (millions) 8

  9. Value of Benchmarking Consistent benchmarking in buildings results in energy savings and improved performance . Cumulative savings for C&I facilities of $3.4 billion. DataTrends Reports • National trends • Sector-specific analyses energystar.gov/ datatrends 9

  10. Benchmarking for Water/Wastewater Treatment Distribution of Source EUI for Wastewater Treatment Facilities 3-4% of electricity consumption is used for water transport and (As of 2015) treatment 9x the difference in source EUI between bottom 5% and top 5% of WWT Facilities 1300+ WWT benchmark energy/water using Portfolio Manager <50 WWT in Ohio currently benchmark 10

  11. Energy Use Intensity at WWT Plants • Influent BOD has a positive correlation with Energy Use Intensity • Nutrient Removal is an indicator of site intensity • More efficient treatment = better Energy Star Score

  12. Program Overview • Free for AEP Ohio business customers • Monthly bill data flows from AEP Ohio in the portal • Automatically sync data with ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager

  13. AEP Ohio Benchmarking Program Benefits • Readily available historical utility data,(36+ months if available) • Automated EUI value or ENERGY STAR scoring • Verify energy use of projects • Less error from manual data collection • Assist in planning: set goals, targets, and timelines to measure progress

  14. ENERGY STAR Scores: What information is needed? • Property information – Building type – Name, street address, ZIP/postal code • Property type data – Gross floor area – Use Details • Plant Design Flow Rate • Average Influent/Effluent BOD • Utility bills – AEP Ohio consumption data automatically delivered – Add’l energy data will be added with upload form (natural gas, etc.)

  15. Announcement • Joined the program 2018 • Automated sync of electric and natural gas data into ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager • Turnkey benchmarking
