Accelerated Math At RMS 2018- 2019
Students are placed with the best intentions.
PARCC Implications
Accelerated Math Designed For Students Who Demonstrate Strong Mathematical Aptitude Designed to Challenge Students and Provide Them With a Rigorous Course to Extend Their Mathematical Abilities Designed to meet the NJSLS (New Jersey Student Learning Standards)
The Accelerated Math Student… Is an Independent Learner Demonstrates Strong Math Aptitude Regularly Seeks Opportunities to Enrich Their Understandings Is a Dedicated Student Who Regularly Exceeds Expectations in the Classroom
Expectations of An Accelerated Student Makes Sense of Problems and Perseveres in Solving Them Reasons Abstractly and Quantitatively Constructs Viable Arguments and Critiques the Reasoning of Others Models With Mathematics
Expectations Continued Uses Appropriate Tools Strategically Attends to Precision Looks For and Makes Use of Structure Looks For and Expresses Regularity in Repeated Reasoning
Math 7 Accelerated Incorporates 7th and 8th Grade NJSLS Develops a Foundational Understanding Necessary For Algebra I Focuses on Higher Order Thinking Skills (Analysis, Evaluation, Application) Requires students to utilize multiple mathematical skills at the same time
Algebra I Incorporates Both 8th Grade and High School NJSLS Requires a Strong Foundation in Number Sense (Especially Related to FRACTIONS!) Requires Students to Generalize Their Understanding of Concepts and Apply These Understandings to Related Situations Challenges even the strongest math students by introducing concepts not previously studied Students must earn a 750 or higher on PARCC (HS Graduation Requirement)
Additional Information Class Size is Limited One Accelerated Class Per Team Marking Period Review General Education Pathway to Algebra I

Student Feedback “Don’t be afraid to be confused - but if you are, ask questions!” “It is a lot more challenging than in previous years.” “You should get used to studying because not everything is going to come as easy for you.”
Student Feedback “I got my first B and C on a test - But you can’t let the hard work scare you.” “Don’t be afraid to get a B in accelerated math - Think of it as good as earning an A in regular math.”
Student Feedback “Make sure you’re prepared to answer a lot of questions - you need to make sure you absolutely want to do this.”
