THE WHY: LEARNING LOSS 5
Tennessee State Law and SCS Policy T Districts must maintain a term of no less than 200 days, divided as follows: Tennessee State Law & SCS Policy ▰ 180 days for classroom instruction ▰ 10 days for vacation with pay ▰ 5 days for in-service education ▰ 1 day for teacher-parent conferences ▰ 4 other days as designated by the Board upon the recommendation of the Superintendent Code Annotated 49-6-3004.docx SCS Policy 5001 - School Calendar http://bit.ly/5001SchoolCalendar 6
Effects of Learning Loss Preliminary estimates suggest impacts may be larger in math than in reading and that students may return in fall 2020 with less than 50% of typical learning gains and, in some grades, nearly a full year behind what we would expect in this subject in normal conditions. 7
Effects of Learning Loss 8
Addressing Lost Instructional Time ▰ Academics combined a list of all standards students did not receive during the 2019-2020 SY as a result of school closures due to COVID-19. ▰ For the 2020-21 SY, teachers will receive, in their curriculum maps and supporting documents, by grade, what standards students missed. This will include instruction on when and how teachers should address those standards during the 2020-2021 school year. ▰ Teachers in a student’s current grade/subject, will address the lost standards when they teach the current grade standards that aligns to the previous year’s standards. ▰ Due to teachers covering more content, the additional days are intended to give teachers more instruction time to review the additional content. ▰ This calendar also allows teachers to look at the social emotional aspect of COVID-19. 9
