Purpose of SSOM • Mission – Promote, support, and provide resources to State DOTs for integrated systems operations and management to improve service to transportation customers and ensure a safe and reliable transportation network. SSOM Strategic Plan – October 31, 2008
Strategic Goals of SSOM • Resource to State DOTs for greater operational reliability, mobility, safety and efficiency • Promote operational Performance Measures for effective business decisions; quantify benefits for policy makers and stakeholders • Support and champion operational technology advances • Mainstream Operations as a core State DOT function • Support optimization of the collection, processing, and application of operations data • Provide the Systems Operations and Management framework to help DOTs SSOM Strategic Plan – October 31, 2008

Activities of SSOM • NCHRP Project 3-94 Systems Operations and Management Guide and is ready for consideration as an AASHTO Guide • NCHRP Project 20-07, Task 298 ; Operations Center of Excellence - expected to be completed in 2012 • NCHRP Project 20-86 , Attracting, Recruiting, and Retaining Skilled Staff for Transportation System Operations and Management – in progress • SHRP2 Reliability Office - coordinating efforts that are mutually beneficial to both TRB and AASHTO • Pending resolution - to include industry associations as a part of the SSOM due to the positive benefits and added value they contribute to the efforts of systems operations and management • Vital Few Survey - to help identify the “vital few” initiatives that SSOM should be focused on • Webinars - Working with FHWA, SHRP2 and ITSA to put on Operations webinars
