2018-2020 Zoning and Feeder Pattern Revision Project Goal: Realign school zones and feeder patterns to optimize student achievement. Rationale: Maintain social and academic stability - Provide equitable course offerings - Utilize student transportation resources effectively - Increase state-funded units - Clear transitions from elementary to middle to high - Provide longitudinal programs -
Initial Process Conduct In-depth analysis of current enrollment and zones Reviewed research related to best practices for school structure and feeder patterns Solicited input from principals and stakeholders Selected a 45 member Steering Committee comprised of: • Community Partners • Parents • City of Birmingham Representatives • Board Members • Housing Authority of Birmingham Representatives • Principals • Union Representatives • Alumni • GIS Software Partners • Employees
Best Practices: Establish a common feeder pattern throughout the District. - Endeavor to zone entire neighborhoods to the same school(s). - Consider students’ proximity to a campus and promote safe and reasonable - walking zones. Utilize student transportation resources effectively. - Utilize natural and man-made elements as boundaries, i.e. railways, highways, - streams. Utilize projected student enrollment and capacity to ensure maximum facility - usage. Consider fiscal impact and minimize future capital and operational budget costs. - Maintain diverse populations. - Consider anticipated construction and residential growth within the community. -
