Model Hotel Suite for Silver Hair Market at T Hotel of VTC A unique training hotel concept • The T Hotel is part of Hong Kong’s Hospitality Industry Training and Development Centre (HITDC) of VTC • It provides authentic training environment and trains up to over 2,000 students each year • It provides accommodation of 30 rooms and is operated by trainees under the supervision of experienced professionals from various fields of the hospitality industry 8
The story began…… • An 82-year-old lady, Ms. Susan Partridge, coming from Oxford to Hong Kong for accommodation at T Hotel in 9/2013 • Due to the short notice of her stay, we immediately made short- term arrangement at the hotel suite to cater for her needs

Background of the Project • The first Silver Economy Index of the Asia Pacific Silver Economy Business Opportunities Report compiled by Ageing Asia of Singapore was released in March, 2014 • Hong Kong emerged at the top of the index out of 15 Asia-Pacific countries followed by Australia , Japan and South Korea in terms of silver industry market potential worthy of trillions of US dollars for the region 11
Background of the Project According to a survey on The Consumable Behavior of Silver Hair Market by Hong Kong Alliance of Silver Hair Market in 2010: • 40-60% of the interviewees had shown great interest in participating in leisure activities including travel, sports, shopping and dining • Those with higher incomes spended over US$3,000 on travelling 12
Objectives of the Project To uplift the relevant knowledge and hands-on practice of students to meet the challenges and opportunities of silver hair market across sectors To demonstrate the design and operation of a model hotel suite for elderly tourists To raise industry awareness of facilities and skills required for serving the elderly To enhance community awareness and a caring attitude towards elderly
Model Hotel Suite for Silver Hair Market • A cross-discipline project in collaboration with Engineering, Design, Information Technology and Hotel Disciplines • An Elder-friendly Design Campaign will be launched and students of VTC will be invited to design a model hotel suite for the elderly • The best design of the model hotel suite will be chosen and adopted for the model hotel suite at T Hotel
Needs Analysis • Needs Analyses were conducted in June 2014 • Survey on Model Hotel Suite for Silver Hair Market (Elderly) – 225 participants aged over 55 – Majority of respondents (60%) were FEMALE – 89.4% : Good Mobility 15
Needs Analysis Interesting Findings • 86.6% reported that professionally-trained room attendants catering for elderly needs were very important • 64.7% opined that elder-friendly facilities were important in the suite • 25% reflected that they were NOT pleased with the accommodation experience. They complained against: Suite Quality (26.8%) Facilities (21.1%) Services (18.4%)
Needs Analysis Survey on Model Hotel Suite for Silver Hair Market (Hotel Personnel) Total Number of Participants: 29 Respondents from hotel personnel Special Trends • Estimation of Occupancy 25% of Hotel Representatives estimated that 21%-30% of customers were aged 55 or above and the trend was rising • 93.8% reported that no specific training for serving the Silver Hair Customers • The following items should be improved: Proactive services to elderly (91%) Facilities (68.2%) Special menu and meals for elderly (52%) 17
