AVOIDING BURNOUT Or preventing physician abuse.
AVOIDING BURNOUT Strong factor in burnout is loss of control over one’s life. Find a good organization and negotiate a good contract that gives you options over your career and how long you stay there. Schedule margin in your life. ▪ Self care (exercise, personal faith, sleep, hobbies) ▪ Relationship Care (family time, time with friends, date night) ▪ Work Care (how many days are you in clinic, how many patients do you see, how many weekends do you work, when do you get home in the evening, do you have times you are completely off) Be Firm about your Margin Time ▪ You must be your own advocate. Unfortunately the health system is in crisis and does not care about you right now. ▪ Say no: “No, I will not see that many patients daily because it is unsafe.” “No, I will not work an additional weekend because you do not have appropriate staffing.” “No, I will not be on another committee or a committee that meets on my day off.”
AVOIDING BURNOUT Stand up for yourself. If there is a policy, person, or patient you think is harmful to physician well being say something. Don’t be afraid to speak to your CEO Staff, Burnout, Contract, Quality Improvement Project Be the canary in the mine for your fellow physicians. (You are not the only one) Physician burnout is physician abuse. Do your part to take care of yourself and respectfully stand up with other physicians to help make the changes the health system needs. It is in the best interest of our patients that we are well.
