Food Animal Quality Assurance Update Ohio 4-H Conference Elizabeth Share-Duling March 9, 2019
Why is Quality Assurance (QA) Required? Chapter 901-19-07 of Ohio Administrative Code • Mandatory rule • Requires all exhibitors to complete QA program prior to exhibiting terminal or partial terminal livestock in a junior livestock show • Youth taking any species or its product that can become part of the food chain • Dairy, Poultry, Beef, Swine, Sheep, and Goats • Market Rabbits if in a terminal or partial terminal show
Minimum Youth QA Teaching Standards • Must be face-to-face • Minimum of 1 hour long • Utilize - Youth Food Animal Quality Assurance Curriculum Guide for instruction material • Must include at least one hands-on activity
Minimum Youth QA Teaching Standards • Must cover current GPPs • 7, 8, & 9 in 2019 • Must incorporate Food Safety and Animal Welfare (Well- being) chapters from Youth Food Animal Quality Assurance Curriculum Guide
Minimum Youth QA Teaching Standards FROM 2018 – • QA Certification must be completed at least 45 days prior to the start of exhibition. • This includes youth exhibiting at the Ohio State Fair. If exhibition at the Ohio State Fair is before their county fair, youth must have completed that training at least 45 days prior to exhibition at the Ohio State Fair.
Minimum Youth QA Teaching Standards • Youth must be QA Certification-eligible in their county in order to exhibit at the Ohio State Fair. • If a youth misses the county deadline for QA training, they cannot go to another county or state-wide training after the deadline and say they are only showing at the Ohio State Fair.
Minimum Youth QA Teaching Standards Youth taking an on-line QA certification such as the YQCA or Ohio BEST Show on-line course does not meet the requirements of Ohio QA certification.
Beef Quality Assurance (BQA)
BQA Youth can take in-person BQA training for Ohio Youth Food Animal QA credit • Is good for one year ONLY • MUST be in-person • County must approve
BQA Youth taking an on-line QA certification such as the BQA, YQCA or Ohio BEST Show on-line course does not meet the requirements of Ohio QA certification.

Ohio State Fair (OSF) Skillathons Skillathons are events for youth to both acquire new knowledge and put their current knowledge about animals to the test for a chance to earn rewards.
