Beef Cattle: On Campus • VDPAM 481: Adv. Cow/Calf Production Medicine : Dr. Terry Engelken – Focus on evidence based medicine, epidemiology, and economics of production using partial budgeting models. Offered twice. Class limit 12. Prereq: VDPAM 310 and 2 semesters of VDPAM 436 or VMED 596 Cattle Production (UNL course) • VDPAM 483: Beef Production Medicine: Dr. Terry Engelken – Exposure to cow-calf and feedlot production concepts. Field trips are incorporated whenever possible. May include a one week visit to GPVEC. Offered three times. Class limit 15. Usually travel to GPVEC in ISU vans with overnight stays required. Prereq: VDPAM 310 • VDPAM 463X: Feedlot Production Medicine: Dr. Grant Dewell – Concurrent enrollment in VDPAM 421D (Feedlot Management) at GPVEC. This course will focus on Iowa feedlot production methods and will build on the information presented at GPVEC. Offered twice. Class limit 7. Prereq: VDPAM 310 and concurrent enrollment in VDPAM 421D.
Beef Cattle: Off Campus • VDPAM 464: Advance Stocker/Feedlot Medicine: Based in Oklahoma: Dr. Shaun Sweiger – Field trips to stocker/beef feedlots in Oklahoma over two week rotation. Students participate in health management/disease prevention, production and economic analysis exercises. Offered twice. Class limit 6. Travel to sites (student’s responsibility) and overnight stays required. Prereq: VDPAM 310 • VDPAM 422A: Southern Plains States Beef Cattle Medicine: Cattle Marketing: Based in Oklahoma: Dr. Shaun Sweiger – Cattle order buying in Oklahoma. Gain understanding of how this segment of the beef industry works. Offered twice. Class limit 2. Travel to sites (student’s responsibility) and overnight stays are required. Prereq: VDPAM 310
Beef Cattle: Off Campus • VDPAM 422B: Southern Plains States Beef Production Medicine: Cattle Processing: Based in Missouri & Oklahoma: Dr. Shaun Sweiger – Hands on cattle working experience-stocker and cow-calf operations in Oklahoma and Missouri- including pregnancy checking and routine vaccinations. Offered 4 times. Class limit of 1 student. Travel to sites (student’s responsibility) and overnight stays are required. Prereq: VDPAM 310 • VDPAM 422C: Southern Plains States Beef Cattle Production: Feedlot Management: Based in Oklahoma: Dr. Shaun Sweiger – Field trips to beef feedlots in Oklahoma. Beef Cattle: Off Campus • VDPAM 422D: Southern Plains States Beef Medicine: Cattle Client Consulting: Based in Oklahoma: Dr. Shaun Sweiger – Consulting visits with Dr. Sweiger in Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas feedlot and stocker operations. Offered 5 times. Class limit of 2. Travel to sites (student’s responsibility) and overnight stays are required. Prereq: VDPAM 310 • VDPAM 422E: Southern Plains States Beef Production Medicine: Beef Cattle Calving: Based in Missouri: Dr. Shaun Sweiger – Hands on working experience during active calving times at a large cow-calf operation in NW Missouri.
