  1. Digital Cities & Services… The FUTURE I sn’t 1 What It USED To Be George Wentz , PE Dave Zelenok , PE Local Gov’t Services Mgr Principal/Vice President GWentz@HRGreen.com DZelenok@HRGreen.com SBCCOG General Assembly February 24, 2017

  2. TODAY’s DISCUSSION 2  New Cities - “Urban F abric” – Neighborhoods Accessibility Issues   Emerging technologies – Fiber Optics - Municipal Broadband  Smart Cities - Street lights, Signals, Infrastructure  The Real Impact of Driverless Cars   Neighborhoods – parking – congestion – plans Reliance on Telecommunications & Technology  What can you do today to position for the future? 

  3. New Cities 3 3 “New” Modes of Transportation… Jurupa Valley, CA

  4. No New “Fortress Malls,” but – 4 New “Urban Centers”

  5. Traditional Neighborhood Design…. 5 Accessibility: Telecommunications

  6. Neighborhood Development’s “Next Generation:” 6 Access to Telecommunications

  7. New Thinking - 7 RE-PURPOSING INFRASTRUCTURE - Bits, Bytes & Gigabits

  8. Emerging Global Trends 8 “SMART CITIES” Interconnecting everything: Streetlights Signals Re-purposing infrastructure Bits, Bytes & Gigabits FINDING & DEFINING OUR FUTURE

  9. Technology Advancements 9 Wireless , coax , copper wires and fiber  Coax & wire systems: ~ 20-40 mbps  1 fiber strand : 1,000 + mbps (virtually “unlimited”)  2003 : a few traffic signals on one strand –  Now ~ 5,000 households on one strand  500+ Cities are now investing in broadband  Longmont ~ $1 Million / month in new revenue!

  10. TELECOM – 101 10 Terminology & TECHNOLOGY 2015: FCC redefined “ Broadband ” - 25 DOWN & 3 UP About half of us don’t have “broadband” today • Gigabit Cities: Approximately 100 • Austin, K.C. • Chattanooga • Santa Monica 1,000 DOWN and 1,000 UP • 30x the speed • Only $50-$70/month

  11. Str Street eet lighting lighting - Summar Summary 11 So Cal Edison ~ $12/month Electricity < $2/month LED’s – reduce power expenses by 50%+ But – power often < 20% of total expenses Cities now municipalizing lighting, Paying separately for energy Up-front capital and conversion costs  R.O.I.s ~ 5-10 years MILLIONS in cost savings possible – Re-purposing street lights : Conduit More Valuable! Traffic signals, utilities and public broadband !

  12. 12 Street lighting & FREE WiFi

  13. Repurposing Your Infrastructure 13 • Do you own pipes in the ground? • Do you control how they are placed? • NEW – Fiber Optics in Electrical Conduits! • Important to understand: • Complex inter-relationships • Revenue opportunities • How the commercial “fiber game” is really played • What’s really valuable, what’s not

  14. Community Fiber – You ARE Already Well Positioned! 14 • Plenty of existing public fiber • SCADA - Utility Control Systems • Intelligent Transportation Systems • AMR/AMI - Automatic Meter Reading • Street Lights • Schools, hospitals, public safety • Benefit • Focus on building infrastructure • Low cost entry point - “ piggybacking ” • How • Develop “Fiber Friendly Policies ” • Innovative Permitting , IGA’s and P3’s • Grant & Other funding sources

  15. The Future will be Mobile and shared … 15 “ IoT – Internet of Things” Everything is on line (yes) But now – Every THING is on line

  16. Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) 16 Driverless vehicles on a guideway One to four seated passengers plus luggage Direct origin to destination service – no stops On demand – not scheduled, very short headways

  17. Emerging Global Trends 17 High-Tech Power Systems:  7 MILES, 22 mph, 15 lbs  Remember that LAST ½ Mile Problem?  Add it to ANYTHING  But – Seniors, Disabled too - ??

  18. Personal Micro Transportation 18 NEW TERMS: MicroTransit HyperLocal Last ½ Mile – Done.

  19. Autonomous – Driverless – Self-Driving 19

  20. Autonomous – Driverless – Self-Driving 20

  21. So – WHAT’s the BIG DEAL? 21 Transit – 5% (maybe) Carpooling – 5 % (maybe) Telecommuting – 10-20% (maybe) Driverless Capacity – 300 (yes) 300%

  22. So – WHAT’s the BIG DEAL? 22 Cost per mile – DROPS 60 cents – 30 cents (2 pax) Connecting “Hubs” (think: airlines) Last ½ mile “micro transit” Disadvantaged – CHEAP mobility! Will we need busses anymore?

  23. Has This Ever Happened Before - ? 23

  24. Are just roads affected? Quick “DEEP DIVE:” 24 PARKING GARAGES ~50% increase in capacity Q: Who wants to pay for parking when you can send your car to run an errand for you: OR - Park itself in the neighborhood OR - Go for a joyride – CLOG the FREEWAY(?) Can you re-use the garage? Low ceilings, slanted floors

  25. Final Thoughts – Post-Driverless Cars 25 • URBAN FABRIC - – people can ride to work and do work • INCREASE sprawl (?) • Think: texting while NOT driving the car • You can live MUCH further away – ouch! • % of Single Occupant Vehicles (SOV’s) – • Today ~ 90% , TOMORROW – 50, 60, 90%? • Crucial: Totally Managed Systems: Telecom • 20 years from now = driverless cars @50%? 60%? 90%? • Q: Your 2030+ plans must include autonomous vehicles! • Streets, Parking, Infrastructure – new specs?!?! • PLAN for their reuse - since many can’t be converted

  26. Q: WHICH Future would you like? 26 TODAY’S FUTURE TOMORROW’s FUTURE ???  10 % Driverless – 2025 80 % Driverless – 2040

  27. Final Thoughts – Post Driverless Cars 27  With autonomous cars – o Send your car home instead of paying for parking! o Are smart cars good for drunk drivers - ? The FUTURE is – o What about city revenue drops from no speeding tickets? o Might this be the end of mass transit as we know it? Not what it “ used to be ” o Highways essentially become “ train tracks ” - BRT’s  With reduced accidents – PS - It arrives tomorrow! o Is there a reduced need for ambulances , fire stations Q: How’s your schedule? o What Else – DON’T WE KNOW?
