What is ESCMID? • Europe’s leading society in clinical microbiology and infectious diseases with members from all European countries and all continents • Mission: to improve the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infection-related diseases. • HOW? By promoting and supporting research, education, training, and good medical practice.

  7. ESCMID Collaborative Centres (ECCs) and Observerships • The observerships are funded opportunities for members to spend one day to one month at an ESCMID Collaborative Centre. • The ECCs are clinical microbiology and/or infectious disease centres of excellence in Europe and beyond. • They attract and welcome ESCMID members from abroad to learn about diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and organizing services as well as to establish new contacts and foster international exchange.

ESCMID Collaborative Centres (ECCs) and Observerships • In 2013, a total of 76 Observership visits took place, up 10% on last year • Most of of the visits were between 1 and 4 weeks (55%) and 45% of the visit were short • Observers came from all over the world: 65 from various European countries and 11 from further afield (including Australia, India, Pakistan, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Yemen)

ESCMID Collaborative Centres (ECCs) and Observerships Eligibility criteria for application: • ESCMID members only • Funding for one Observership within 12 months • There are no age restrictions • The Observership can only take place in Collaborative Centres • Only outside-of-country visits will be sponsored • Every application for support is subject to review and approval by ESCMID • Application has to be submitted at least 2 months before the intended Observership visit starts

  16. ESCMID Collaborative Centres (ECCs) and Observerships How to apply: • ESCMID members submit their request for an ESCMID Observership visit through an online application form directly to the ESCMID Collaborative Centre (ECC) • only one Observership request at a time

ESCMID Collaborative Centres (ECCs) and Observerships Funding rules: a) Intra-European Observership visits (up to 1200 EUR): • EUR 500 max. for travel expenses (air ticket, train ticket, car expenses at EUR 0.30 per km) • EUR 70 per diem (up to a maximum of 10 days) b) Intercontinental Observership visits - outgoing/incoming (up to 1700 EUR) • EUR 1000 max. for travel expenses (air ticket, train ticket, car expenses at EUR 0.30 per km) • EUR 70 per diem (up to a maximum of 10 days)

  19. ESCMID ECDC Observerships • First visit took place in Sept 2013 • In 2014, a group of 10 observers are offered a 5 day programme at the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) in Stockholm, Sweden. • only once a year (for now) • www.escmid.org/ECDC_Observer

ESCMID WHO Observerships • First visit took place in June 2013 • In 2014, a group of 10 observers are offered a 3 day programme at the WHO Regional Office for Europe, Division of Communicable Diseases, Health Security and Environment (DCE) in Copenhagen, Denmark. • only once a year (for now) • www.escmid.org/WHO_Observer

ESCMID Courses, Workshops, Conferences, Summer School ECCMID • The Society’s annual congress, attracts more than 10,000 participants from all aver the world each year • offers a wide range of sessions including keynotes, symposia, poster sessions, educational workshops, meet-the-expert sessions and more • Study Groups and Committees can propose workshops and symposia which are then reviewed by Programme Committee • Lectures are freely accessible through Online Lecture Library for ESCMID members

ESCMID Courses, Workshops, Conferences, Summer School Educational Courses and Workshops • each year around 15-20 ESCMID Courses/Workshops are organized • for smaller groups of participants (15-80), more interactive, include practical work, condensed programme, high quality faculty • international environment, networking • a number of attendance grants available for each Course/Workshop, preferably for members under age 35 • by the end of 2014 still 12 Courses/Workshops

ESCMID Awards and Grants • ESCMID Young Investigator Award – acknowledges excellence in research, and stimulates further research of the highest scientific level – invited lecture at ECCMID – invited to write a review paper reflecting their field of research for publication in Clinical Microbiology and Infection (CMI). – < 40 years old • TAE Award in Training Achievements – intended to recognize and reward outstanding trainees in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases – up to 1500 EUR for attending any ESCMID Educational Activity

ESCMID Awards and Grants • ESCMID Research Grants – help young and excellent investigators to pursue groundbreaking research in the fields of clinical microbiology and infectious diseases – The maximum amount granted per project is EUR 20'000 – may be used to support the entire project or part of the project – < 40 years old • Study Group Research Grants – exclusively available for official ESCMID Study Group research projects in the fields of clinical microbiology and infectious diseases – full support by one or more Study Groups mandatory – The maximum amount granted per project is EUR 30'000

Parity Commission – Mentorship programme • The mentorship Programme will run through the net of Collaborative Centres & Observership programme • Centers will provide 1-2 Mentors per center and related topics of excellence • PC together with PAS will select most important topics and 10 centers that will serve as Mentorship centers for ESCMID (pilot study)
