LUSSIER Superintendent of Schools Dr. JOAN DABROWSKI CYNTHIA MAHR Assistant Superintendent, Teaching and Learning Assistant Superintendent, Finance and Operations LORI V. CIMENO, Director of Student Services KATHLEEN F. DOOLEY, Director of Technology To: Dr. David Lussier From: Dr. Joan Dabrowski Date: May 3, 2019 Re: Wellesley High Schools, Annual Update on Standardized Assessments We are pleased to share the most recent data from several standardized assessments that our WHS students complete. Jamie Chisum, Dana Plunkett, and I will lead this presentation. We will share participation and achievement data from the following exams: PSAT, SAT, Pre-ACT, ACT and Advanced Placement (APs). As you will learn in this presentation, the overwhelming narrative for most students in Wellesley is positive. At the same time, the data prompts us to consider areas for further analysis and improvement in order to ensure that all of our students can access these exams and courses, and score well on them. Specifically, we continue to work on narrowing the achievement gap that persists both in the areas of participation and achievement. Finally, as part of our next steps, we will share our current thinking on the need to widen our assessment lens. While we recognize the importance of our traditional measures of academic success, we are cognizant that they can be narrow views of student performance. We are committed to finding additional ways for students to show us what they know and understand – and that we measure these experiences. To that end, we will offer examples of where and how we are integrating 21 st century assessments that push for critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication, and social/emotional wellness. We look forward to your feedback and question
