Birth weight, length, h h, head circumference at term in Bangladeshi eshi Neonates: a small scale stu e study Dr Sadeka Choudhury Moni Assistan istant Professor Department ent of Neonatology BS BSMMU
Introdu duction Body weight, length and head circumfere ference at birth reflect peri- and postnatal growth and health of newborn orn Neonatal assessment is currently based o Neonatal assessment is currently based o ed on standards growth curves ed on standards growth curves In 1966, Lubchenco et al produced the fi he first intrauterine growth reference charts & INTERGROWTH-21 st standard WHO Child Growth Standards (2006) & I
……………Introduction ion Growth curves for use in neonatal asse assessment must be related to specific geographic areas (race, ethnicity etc) Comparable differences in newborn ass assessment has been demonstrated between countries between countries In Bangladesh newborn are classified fied according to international standard charts No local reference charts are available ble for neonates born in Bangladesh
Objective of of the Study • To observe weight, length ngth and head circumference of term ne circumference of term ne newborns ( ≥37weeks) at newborns ( ≥37weeks) at birth birth • To compare measured val values with standard chart currently in use
Materials & M Methods: Type of Study: Cross sectiona nal observational study Place of study: BSMMU & Ma Maternity hospital at Dhaka City Period of Study: one year July uly 2016 to June 2017 Study population: Newborns s Born at 37 completed weeks thereafter Sampling Technique: Purposi osive Sample size: 386
Inclusion on Criteria • All liveborn singleton new All liveborn singleton new newborns newborns • Delivered by healthy moth mother at term (≥37 weeks of gestation)
Exclusion ion Criteria . Newborn Infants born by m by mothers - With hypertensive dise isease of pregnancy - With gestational or pre pregestational diabetes - Having chronic diseas - Having chronic diseas ases ases - Identified as smokers ers . Newborns with congeni enital malformations
Data Collection and nd analysis: Informed consent obtained A group of trained doctors and nurses w es were engaged to take weight, length and head circumference at birth length and head circumference at birth birth in the delivery room / Caesarean birth in the delivery room / Caesarean section room Weight of the baby was recorded befo before initiation of breast feeding Length and head circumference were re measured by 48 hours of age
…………..Data Colle llection and analysis • Weight was measured using electro ctronic weighing scale using unit in gram • Length was measured in centimeter eter using a infantometer • The head circumference was measu • The head circumference was measu asured in centimeter using a firm asured in centimeter using a firm plastic tape • Maternal informations were explore lored from hospital records and by interviewing • After collection data statistical anal analysis was done
Resu sults: A total of 386 newborns were inc e included Male were 198(51.3%)and femal male were 188 (48.7%) Considering birth weight most (8 st (87.2%) had normal birth weight 12.8% had low birth weight
