  2. How do we already use technology? We currently have - Grade level class sets of laptops - 1:1 laptops in the computer lab - Class set of iPads that can be checked out @ Sycolin Creek

  3. Additional Notes from the Meeting: We have more technology this year than in previous years! We were refreshed summer 2016. Our ratio is 1 laptop for every 3.6 students. This gives us enough laptops for 1:1 in the computer lab and each grade level has a class set of laptops. In addition, our wonderful PTA purchased a class set of iPads that can be checked out and used in the classrooms.

What we currently use - Practice skills (DreamBox, Reflex, Raz-kids, SOL Pass, websites) - Formative and Summative Assessment (PowerTest, BrainPop quizzes, Kahoot) - Research (online resources) - Creation (Word, PowerPoint, Online sites) - Collaboration (projects, presentations, Google Classroom) @ Sycolin Creek

  5. Additional Notes from the Meeting: There are many resources we students access daily to enhance learning. We practice skills (list of utilized sites). We assess student learning (formative and summative assessments) We conduct research We create We collaborate *Notice that many of these resources are web-based, and that’s where BYOT fits in so perfectly!

  7. What is BYOT? Bring Your Own Technology Also known as BYOD (Device) We are ready! @ Sycolin Creek

  8. Additional Notes from the Meeting: We are ready for BYOT to come to Sycolin Creek! Students are digital citizens, it is not foreign to them, it is natural to utilize technology with their learning. Other schools participated in a BYOT pilot last year, we feel we have learned from to launch a successful BYOT program. Our students are ready!

  9. When is BYOT? Countdown to BYOT Mrs. Becker’s 3 rd grade, 4 th grade, and 5 th grade – Starting Q2 (Nov. 9 th ) Other 3 rd grade classes – Starting Q3 (Jan 30 th ) @ Sycolin Creek

  10. Additional Notes from the Meeting: -Mrs . Becker’s 3 rd grade class, all 4 th grades, and all 5 th grade classes will begin the beginning of the 2 nd quarter – Nov. 9 th -The rest of 3 rd grade classes will begin the beginning of the 3 rd quarter – January 30 th (following Moveable Teacher work day). -As we begin, teachers will use BYOT as they are comfortable with, and what they feel is best for their class. -It may be once a week on a designated day, or it may be every day. The teacher will share more information about the frequency of BYOT.

  11. Student Safety in Our Priority Common Sense Education Certification All students in grades 3- 5 participating in Common Sense Education’s Digital Citizenship program. Covers a broad range of topics to keep students safe and effective users of technology. @ Sycolin Creek

Additional Notes from the Meeting: -Common Sense Media Lessons are taught by teachers, guidance, library, and computer lab. -3 rd grade lessons: Cyberbullying (guidance), Keywords (library), Communication, Privacy, Pledge and BYOT expectations -4 th grade lessons: Cyberbullying (guidance), Keywords (library), Privacy, Giving Credit, Pledge and BYOT expectations -5 th grade lessons: Cyberbullying (guidance), Keywords (library), Privacy Rules, Citing a Site, Pledge and BYOT expectations -Students took a pre-test to evaluate Digital Citizenship before lessons, and post-test is used to evaluate learning that took place of each topic. -It is our concern and yours that students make safe choices when online. Building background knowledge in these areas is crucial. These concepts will be reinforces whenever students using technology, whether it belongs to the school or students’ own devices with BYOT.

  13. Why Participate? Participation is Optional - Not mandatory to bring a device - At Parent’s Discretion Familiarity - Students can use devices that they are already familiar with Accessibility - Have more access to technology to support learning @ Sycolin Creek

  14. Additional Notes from the Meeting: It is a parent’s choice whether or not their child brings a device to school. It is TOTALLY OPTIONAL! - Students will not be penalized for not bringing a device - Students will have the opportunity to use a school issued device Why participate? - Students may be more familiar with their own device - More accessibility to technology (don’t have to wait until the technology piece is available).

  15. What Makes a Good BYOT Device? BYOT Devices - Although we can’t recommend specific devices, we can certainly help make some good choices! - Size may help productivity -Connection to wifi using LCPS filter -Protect device with case, screen protector, labeled, etc. -Keyboard, mouse, headphones etc may help with productivity. -More information on our school website -> BYOT channel @ Sycolin Creek

Additional Notes from the Meeting: We are not able to make specific recommendations about what device to bring for BYOT. - Not necessary to have the most expensive model, as long as it has wifi connectivity student will be able to participate. - It must connect through LCPS Open wifi to utilize the filter to help keep students safe – absolutely no cell phone data should be used. - Above 10 inches will increase productivity. - School is not responsible for the device, should be labeled, in a case, screen protector, keyboard and mouse can increase productivity, personal headphones helpful. - Should come to school charged and students should have basic knowledge of how to use device. - Visit the BYOT Student Launch page to make sure sites are working on your personal device

Additional Notes from the Meeting: Parents were invited to be involved in BYOT by selecting different devices (laptop, iPad, or Dell tablet, or own personal device) We looked at Kahoot with a 1:1 device We looked at Kahoot with group collaboration (worked in teams) We looked at Padlet to see how text, voice, photos, videos etc could be uploaded to a “wall”.
