  1. Welcome to our phonics and reading meeting glow goat gloa pie light liet play trayn train girl flower gerl

  2. Thank you for coming to our phonics meeting today – we really appreciate your support. In this meeting I want to … Inform you about what phonics is and why it is so important Share with you how we teach phonics at Springfield Most importantly how you can support your child with phonics and reading at home Inform you about the books your child will bring home And offer some time for general questions. If you have any specific questions about your child if you could hold those and come and find me at the end, thank you. So I have written up 4 words on the board? Who knows what the first one is? This activity highlights how difficult it is for children to read/write words.

  4. What is Phonics? So phonics teaches children to how to read and write. Phonics matches the sounds of spoken English to that of letters. Sounds easy – but our English language is one of the hardest to learn. We have 26 letters We have 44 sounds But there are over 150 ways of writing those sounds! We use Read Write Inc phonics programme to help teach our children phonics.

  5. What does phonics look like at Springfield?

  6. Daily speed sound lessons Read the sound Say the sound stretchy bouncy Write the sound Fred talk the sound

  7. In Reception the children will have daily speed sound lessons (sometimes only 4 days a week) Sounds formal but it is a quick 10-15 minute session which the children love and are fully involved in throughout. Often see them being me later in the day! When we teach a new sound we… Say the sound – look a pictures, say the sound mmmmmmmmmm, explain it is a stretchy sound Read the sound – draw the m and draw the little ditty over the m Children will practise writing the letter and say the little ditty to help (lots of opportunities for this throughout the day as well as it is hard) Fred talking words – fred talks in teachers ear and says a word we then practise fred talking it m a t – mat. We do a lot of Fred talk around school . Line up at the d or Take the lid off your p e n Open the b oo k As the children learn more and more sounds – show board with all of the them on we will start to introduce red words. These are words that can’t be fred talked such as the/she/put. Children just need to learn these.

  8. How can you help at home?

  9. Read ‘real’ books School library books Sharing books

  10. It might sound simple but as a parent this is one of the most important part of reading you can support your child with at home. Doing this enables your child to become a story teller, learn how to use a story telling voice, listen to exciting vocabulary, learn how books work (how to turn pages carefully/ reading from Left to Right/top to bottom). You might notice that they enjoy hearing books over and over again! This is how their brains absorb stories and language patterns. At school we offer children the opportunity to bring home a ‘sharing book’ daily (although these books can be kept for longer – children like to read books again) They might choose a book they have at home/read previous weeks – this is great and shows they have remembered a certain book and will enjoy listening to it again. They will also be able to bring home a library book once a week. Please keep this book in their book bag and then every week (different day for each class) they are asked to put their library book in a special box with you in the morning. Please continue to read books you have at home and visit the local library in Worthing.

  11. Practise the daily sound at home Use pure sounds

  12. Having Tapestry allows as to quickly and easily share the sound of the day with you. There is a great clip from Read Write Inc that explains why it is so important for children to say pure sounds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYx1CyDMZSc We will also put a short video showing how to write the letter using the correct formation.

  13. Banded books

  14. Your child will also bring home a banded book – a book with a colour sticker on. A majority of the children in Reception will come home with lilac books. These have no words in them. Parents often look at me very strangely when they get a book home that has no words in. At this point of the year we haven’t taught the children enough letters to make words so sending a book home that they can’t read is often very demoralising for them. Sharing a book with no words allows you and your child to make up their own stories, they often use language from favourite books in their story. This is a very valuable part of reading, Once we feel your child is ready for the next colour band we will make a note of this in their home school book. Keep reading real books to them. We ask that you help your child change their book when you come in to school each morning – 2/3 times a week. Please then place the book inside their home school reading diary and they go together in their team colour box in the classroom. A good habit to get into is to write what books you read at home. Just date and name of the book is fine – add more comments if you would like too. When we read with your child we will also write in their books.

  15. Any general questions?
