Overview • 3 weeks of shadowing/hands on experience in Shirati District Hospital located in Shirati, Tanzania • Different wards include: Male/Female Ward, Peds Ward, Surgery, OB/GYN, Path lab, HIV Outreach, Outpatient, Physical Therapy, Radiology • Most common patient complaints: Malaria, Schistosomiasis, Pneumonia, TB, HIV, UTI, Trauma, etc.

  3. Logistics • Date of program: June • Fly from US to Nairobi, Kenya • Airfare: $1200-1700 roundtrip • Meet up with other Touro students and stay in Mennonite Guest House • Drive from Nairobi to Shirati all day (~12 hr drive) • Stay in Shirati for 3 weeks • Lodging + food: $25-30 per night from Bishop or SHED Hostel • Shadow various departments during weekdays • Community outreach during weekend • Optional Safari Trip to Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater • Total cost: $2500-4500

  4. Nairobi, Kenya • Meeting point for all the students • Room and board provided by Mennonite Guest House (~$60 night) • Explore the city before you start the real work! • Nairobi National Park • Nairobi Market

Opportunities in Shirati • Rotate through various wards: Men’s, Women’s, Peds, Maternity, Outpatient, Surgery, Physical Therapy, Radiology, etc. • Community health outreach • Helping Babies Breath • Masonga Village Screening and Treatment • HIV Outreach • Learn about Tanzanian culture in the hospital and the community

Shirati Hospital • Great opportunity to see infectious diseases you learned in the classroom • Allowed to scrub in and assist in surgeries! • Allowed to assist with delivering babies! • Interesting cases we saw: • Malaria, Schistosomiasis, TB, HIV, Pneumonia, Spleen Rupture, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Burkitt’s Lymphoma, Leprosy Amputation

  7. Room and Board • SHED Hostel • $30 a night for food and accommodations • Shared rooms • Slightly further from hospital but more spacious • Laundry included • Bishop Hostel • $25 a night for food and accommodations • Single room • Closer to the hospital • Laundry not included

  8. Helping Babies Breathe • Neonatal resuscitation course developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics to address mortality rates worldwide • This past visit we taught the course to over 50 nursing students in Shirati Hospital! • 2 sessions, each 2 hours long • Project leaders needed! • Contact Sundeep if interested!

  9. Masonga Health Outreach • Traveled to nearby village of Masonga (~15 mins away by car) • Screened and treated over 100 participants for Hypertension, Diabetes, Malaria, Schistomiasis risk • Need lots of money for equipment, staff, and medications so start fundraising early! • Lots of planning involved so don’t procrastinate • Project leaders needed! • Contact Mohammad, Jonathan, Paras, and Zishan if interested!

  10. Activities Outside the Hospital • Lake Victoria • Hike to Oboke Mountain • Monday Market • Observe Traditional Medicine

Fundraising • Ideally the Outreach needs about $2000 • Fundraiser Ideas: Silent Auction, The Habit Fundraiser, Class BBQ, GoFundMe, etc. • Shirati Hospital is always in need of stethoscopes, BP Cuffs, other equipment so any donations are appreciated! • Contact Adam Freeman or Trusha Shah for logistics on setting up the silent auction or Habit fundraiser!

  12. Optional Safari • Two options: • Dr. Mahmoud’s 7 day safari which includes: Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Zanzibar Island • ~$2400 for full trip • Misele Safari: 3 day safari which includes: Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater • ~$900 for full trip • Both are great options: 1st one is more expensive but you have a chance to see Zanzibar Island resort and stay in luxury hotels. 2nd trip is more “budget- friendly” and flexible
