Staying Social and Active Over the Winter Priscilla Simpson Sport and Physical Activity Team Manager
Why does it matter? • Darker days and nights, colder weather • Fear of falls • Fear of hypothermia • Less likely to go out • Increased feeling of being lonely • Seasonal Affective Disorder
Staying warm, staying active, staying social
Planning for it... • planning for a winter that is still active and fun • Develop a schedule, invite friends • It will be different for every person • Evidence shows that there are certain factors that can help to increase everyone’s wellbeing
What’s good for the body is good for the heart and the brain • Physical Activity sports, walking, gardening, yoga, cleaning... • Nutrition salt intake, sugar intake, healthy eating, cholesterol...
What’s good for the head is good for the heart… • Mental Activity Routines, things to look forward to, learning, culture... Stress Relief Identifying the stress, understanding it and releasing it... Feeling safe, financial stress, security of the basics food, home, warmth... Cup half full Enjoying, being thankful, reframing...
What’s good for the soul is good for the heart... Relationships Combating loneliness, family, friends, colleagues… What’s good for the soul Volunteering, feeling useful, giving back, having a role, a purpose, beliefs...
How can I achieve this? • Through staying active • By being social and engaging with others in a variety of ways

Keeping Active • MOVES exercise classes (over 65s) • Dances - Tea, Line & Desi • Healthy Walks • Leisure centre: Young at heart • Free swimming (over 65s)/swimming lessons • Bowling clubs • Cycling • Active 50+ Brunel • Allotments
Keeping Active through MOVES • This includes chair based & zumba gold exercise in libraries & community centers • Check out your local library to find out time and day of all the session • Uxbridge Tuesdays at 11:30am • Botwell Thursdays at 10:00am • Manor Farm Monday 10:00am Cost £1
Keeping Active through Dance • Tea Dances monthly at the Civic Centre and Winston Churchill Hall (3 rd Monday & Thursday month) • Tea Dances and Line Dances at West Drayton Community Centre (First Monday or Tuesday of the month) • Desi Dance at Botwell (last Wednesday of each month)

Line dance session
A new project: Tovertafel (Magic Table) To offer a meaningful and accessible activity to people living with dementia that they are able to share with their family and friends at the leisure. To offer groups the opportunity to utilise Tovertafel in Hillingdon libraries for free.
