Please feel free to ask questions as you move around the school. All options are subject to timetabling, staffing and financial constraints.

  4. How should I choose my options?  Think long term-not just for the next two years  What are my plans for my next stages? Sixth Form, college, work–based training, employment, apprenticeship, university?  What are my career plans and aims? Do I know what subjects are needed for the future?  What are my personal qualities and skills?

  5. How should I choose my options?  Careers advice: our website, careers newsletters, the internet, family  What is my ability? Can I cope with some subjects?  Don`t be influenced by friends’ choices; you are unlikely to be in the same groups  Find out about `new` subjects by speaking to the subject teachers  Remember free option choices may be restricted by entry requirements e.g. computing, triple science and business studies.

  6. What if I am unsure?  Look at your most recent student SPR and other related school reports  Discuss your progress with your teachers  Read the extensive information that is available on the website, in the LRC or on school twitter  Ask for advice at school - mentors, learning support staff, house staff, older students and teaching staff.  Book a careers interview – Mr Pickles or Mrs Marshall  Check requirements for future choices.

  18. The National Curriculum SOME RECENT QUOTES  “A study by the UCL Institute of Education shows that studying subjects included in the Ebacc provides students with greater opportunities in further education. Sutton Trust research reveals that studying the Ebacc can improve a student’s performance in GCSE Mathematics and English  The Russell Group guide on making informed choices for post-16 education identifies ‘facilitating subjects’. These are the subjects most likely to be required or preferred for entry to degree courses and ones that will keep the most options open. The subjects they identify are those included in the English Baccalaureate – mathematics, English, sciences , geography, history and languages (classical and modern).

  19. The National Curriculum The Government’s View  The Government wants the majority of students to follow a curriculum which contains the subjects of the English Baccalaureate (English, mathematics, science, history or geography and a modern language)  The EBacc is a suite of subjects not a qualification in itself  It may put you in a strong position for future progression e.g. will university entrance be influenced by it?  Employers may well look for these qualifications as well as other skills and attributes  We believe that our curriculum offers choice for all students of all abilities and we will continue to personalise .

  20. The Pathways Students have been allocated pathways based on:  The very best professional advice of staff  previous attainment and potential  school reports over time  views of house teams  pastoral considerations  views of our learning support staff.

  21. Choosing two options from one area Some students may wish to study two subjects from one option area (e.g. two technologies or two creative subjects). This may be possible – please explain your reasons fully in a supporting statement.

  22. The Online Application  Please provide as much detail as you can as to why you want to study the subjects in Years 10 and 11  Ask your parent or carer to comment on your choices  Register your options choices online by Midnight on Friday 7 th February 2020.
