  3. Your Choices ARE Important…But Embrace this new chapter in your lives! This process is not meant to be stressful. We are here tonight to help make this transition as smooth as possible. • Research your choices with the intent of staying in the courses you choose CDG, current teachers, older siblings, counselors Strive for BALANCE (time management worksheet) • Don’t take classes because that’s what your friends are taking. You likely won’t • end up in the same class with them and we don’t make changes so you can be with your friends. JAG time- 1 hour every day West staffing and master schedule are based on what you request during this • process Schedule changes are difficult/impossible due to the way the master schedule is • built • Don’t assume you will be able to change from honors to on-level or on-level to honors. Sometimes it’s not possible and you have to stay in the class you choose. When in doubt, take the on- level course. There is usually more room to move up • than move down. There are no guarantees moving will be possible • To MAINTAIN the same level of success you achieve in middle school will require you to work harder in high school.

  12. Honors? West encourages all students to challenge themselves academically. This means different paths for different students. You have to make the best choices for you. Some things to consider…. Are you self-motivated? • Do you have strong study habits, time management and organizational • skills? Do you have a passion for the subject? • What other time commitments to you have? • How well to you handle stress? • Are you resilient? • Talk to your current teachers (recommendations) • Complete the Time Management Worksheet • When in doubt, take the lower level. It is usually easier to “level up” later, • but movement either way is never guaranteed. Listen to English, math and science presentations at NJN for information • about how the classes are similar and different.

  13. Course Request Card • Complete entire form (rough draft first) • Don’t forget alternates • Keep the 3 rd (pink) copy for your records • Return the first 2 copies to M.S. counseling office by Friday, January 26 th • Counselors will be back to LMS on January 31 st and PRMS on February 1 st to answer questions and help enter course requests online.
