Prevention Update • Worker Health and Safety Awareness In 4 Steps • Resources to assist with mandatory health and safety awareness training for workers. • Workbooks with employer guide are now available at http://www.labour.gov.on.ca/english/hs/prevention/ awareness.php • Anticipated regulation will be filed by July 1 st and come into effect January 1, 2014. 6
Prevention Update • Two task groups named to study prevention among vulnerable workers and small business • Each group made up of 6 worker representatives and 6 employer representatives. • Expected to study the issues, gather information and report back over a period of not more than 30 months. • Advisory members are posted at: http://www.labour.gov.on.ca/english/hs/prevention /task_groups.php 7

High Hazard Jobs/Occupations – Municipal Sector • Public works and maintenance labourers: exposure to vibration, work from heights, confined spaces, MVIs; heavy equipment operations • Waste management workers: exposure to biological and chemical agents, e.g., heavy metals, dioxins, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, airborne bacteria and fungi, confined spaces (Lavoie et al., 2006; Wultsch et al., 2011) • EMS, police, firefighters: exposure to communicable diseases; MVIs; workplace violence and aggression; traumatic events (PTSD); • Paramedics: high rate of MSDs 9

Launch of the 2013 – 14 EnAbling Change Program • The EnAbling Change Program is an initiative of the Accessibility Directorate of Ontario (ADO) that provides financial support and expertise to organizations to educate an industry or sector across the province on its obligations under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). • The program funds a limited number of large-scale projects that have an impact across the province. It also funds projects to develop innovative approaches that increase accessibility awareness and promote Ontario as a world leader in accessibility. • A goal of this program is to increase access and awareness of healthy living, leisure and recreation opportunities for people with disabilities. WSIB Coverage for Construction Workers • Effective January 1, 2013 WSIB mandatory coverage required for independent operators, sole proprietors, partners and executive officers in the construction industry. • These persons are deemed workers under the WSIA. • Ensure clearance certificates for all contractors 19
Changes to Workwell • Workwell program still operating under WSIB • Discontinue audits however will be doing risk assessment • No second audits • Surcharge temporarily suspended • Maximum period of 6 months to complete risk management assessment • Risk assessment based on significant hazards 20

PSHSA Suggestions • Attend all four networking meetings (minimum 3) • Same person attend all networking meetings • Invite Senior Management Representative or JHSC/HS Rep to networking meeting (in-person or webinar) • Accept visit from PSHSA Consultant during program year • If you need help, ASK and don’t delay!! • Focus on current elements but don’t forget MAINTENANCE!! 29
