Wayne County is made up of small cities, villages and agricultural communities. 2. The County tends to be socially conservative, and is heavily influenced by higher education (College of Wooster, The Ohio State University’s Agricultural Institute and Akron University’s Wayne College), and religious sects such as the Amish and Mennonite. 3. Wayne County has a long-standing history of philanthropic support and involvement from the community. 1

Data is from the 2015 and 2014 Youth Asset and Substance Use Survey. Priority Population The priority population is youth, grades 8-10, living in Wayne County, Ohio. As sampled by the 2015 and 2014 Youth Asset Substance Use Survey. 2

  3. 5/30/17 Priority Population These are the most important things you need to understand about our priority population: 1. Seventy-six percent (76%) of local youth come from a two-parent home. 2. There is a strong high school sports culture throughout the county and many students are active in more than one sport or club. However, the lack of public transportation makes it difficult for many youth to participate. 3. Individuals and families from varied economic backgrounds live closely together, and help create a diverse culture within the schools. Problem Statement Twenty-seven percent (27%) of 8 th graders and 45% of 10 th graders in Wayne County reported drinking alcohol in the past year, both rates are higher than the national average (18% for 8 th grade and 38% for 10 th grade). * Percentages are rounded off to nearest whole number.
