Washington D.C. October 23-25, 2019 South Woods 8 th grade Information and Expectations
Students are expected to arrive at South Woods Middle School Wednesday at 5:45 AM Students will return to South Woods Middle School Friday approximately 5:30 PM (traffic dependent) Students should have breakfast and lunch packed for the bus ride to Washington D.C. There is a bathroom on the bus.
MEDICATION – Medication, including over the counter medication, must be submitted in a labeled Ziploc bag with the appropriate medical form to the nurse by October 1st. Without this step, you will not be able to have medication available. **EXTENDED FINAL DATE MONDAY 10/1**
Hotel Information - We have private overnight security in each hallway 23 Chaperones (including administrator and two nurses) Roughly 1 Chaperone per 10 kids
Touring- • Students will be walking early and often, pack accordingly • Student will travel as a group with bus chaperones • Each bus has a tour guide S PENDING MONEY – There may be time to buy souvenirs… $20 per day?
CURFEW – Students are expected back in their rooms by roughly 9:30 PM
Electronic Devices– Students are responsible for their devices. If they don’t want it ruined it may be best not to bring it!
CELL PHONES and SOCIAL MEDIA ● Cell phones are permitted on the trip; however, students are reminded to exercise good judgement and digital citizenship. ● Students participating in the trip have an EXPECTATION OF PRIVACY that is covered both by our Code of Conduct and the law . Students may NOT photograph or videotape others without their express consent. Any student who compromises another's privacy through the use of an electronic device and/or otherwise violates the Code of Conduct or Dignity for All Students Act will be removed from the trip. “Selfies” at memorials and attractions commanding honor and respect (i.e. the Vietnam Memorial) are inappropriate and NOT PERMITTED!!
PUNCTUALITY – Students are on a tight schedule …
• PACK LIGHTLY – Students are allowed one suitcase and one carry-on bag. Students are responsible for carrying luggage on and off the bus and into the hotel, make sure it is a manageable size and weight.
• CARRY-ON BAG – Put things students might need for the first day of the trip (extra sweater) into a carry-on bag. Students will not be returning to the hotel until 7:00 PM. Pack items that entertain for the bus ride… a book, magazine and/or electronic devices.
• CLOTHING – Check the Internet for temperatures in Washington, D.C. and pack appropriately. Students must have: comfortable walking shoes. We average 9-11 miles daily. Students need to have clothes and toiletries for 3 days and 2 nights of travel.
