Today’s agenda • Background – Sheffield’s Transport Situation – Why Broomhall? • The proposal – The proposed scheme – what and why – Consultation feedback • Discussion • Next steps
Transport in Sheffield • Worsening efficiency of transport system • Significant plans for growth across the City • 10-20% more car traffic by 2024 • Serious worsening of city centre congestion • Aggravate existing serious air quality issues • Risk to development and regeneration of the city
Making better use of highway space
Cycling potential in Sheffield • Cycling could relieve city centre of up to 2,800 car commutes into the city centre • Roughly equivalent to – – 90% of AM peak hour inflow on Sheffield Parkway – Weekday peak hour car traffic generated by 2 Retail Quarters • Provides headroom for growth • Improved health, air quality, safety and accessibility
Why Broomhall? • Part of area of greatest opportunity for cycling to support development of the City – 12% of potential to save city centre car trips is in the west within 1½ miles of the Ring Road • Provides connectivity between SHU Collegiate Campus and City Centre • First scheme of a much wider ambition for cycling – A number of key cross city routes have been identified – To provide safe cycling from anywhere, to any place, at any time
Route Choice • Direct • Avoids complex junctions • Avoids any significant uphill sections
How could the street look? Broomhall Road – looking towards Park Lane
How could the street look? Broomhall Road – looking towards Collegiate Crescent
What changes are we proposing for Broomhall Street & Broomhall Road? • A different street look and layout – Based on international best practice • A reduction in the volume of traffic trying to avoid the ring road – One way street (Park Lane to Victoria Road) • A reduction in on-street, long stay commuter / long term university parking – No loss of overall permit / pay and display spaces – Reduces the need to constantly give way to oncoming vehicles • Buildouts to assist crossing pedestrians – A better pedestrian environment.
Consultation plan (Broomhall St)
Consultation plan (Broomhall Rd)
Main consultation issues • One Way System between Park Lane and Victoria Road – – Transfer of traffic to other routes – Convoluted route for residents – Possible congestion at other junctions in area – Suggestions of a peak hour only restriction • Parking – – Impact on opportunities for residents to park – Impact on drop off and pick up for the nursery – Impact on parking for the University
