VUSD 8 Period Schedule Presentation Rancho Buena Vista and Vista High School Focus
Rationale: RBV and VHS students should be provided the same course opportunities as MVHS as well as neighboring high schools. ● RBV has a structural problem with scheduling that makes it overly difficult for its diverse population to reach their academic potential. RBV is an “outpost” school that loses students to neighboring district schools and charter schools that offer more course opportunities. ● VHS has the same structural issues, but must also fit in XQ courses. VHS students will be able to better complete A-G courses along with XQ courses. ● Investing in an 8 period schedule will allow RBV and VHS students to be competitive with neighboring districts and retain students who would otherwise opt for neighboring district high schools/charter schools. Logically, this schedule change will help pay for the investment by attracting and retaining students.

Frequently Asked Questions Q: How will this impact students? A: Students will be able to take additional courses and be able to better personalize their schedules. Schedules will vary based on student interest and/or student needs. Students will only need to do homework for a given class every other night. Q: How will this impact teachers? A: Teachers will be responsible for teaching 6/8ths instead of the current 5/6ths. Teachers may increase the number of preps due to the addition of electives within their content area. They will gain a conference period to help them better prepare for their courses. Overall class size averages will decrease because of the additional course being taught, but the 165 daily student contacts will remain the same. Q: Will teachers want to teach new electives and/or support classes? A: Yes! For example, with 98% of the staff voting at RBV high school, 89% of teachers approved this schedule with enthusiastic support for starting new electives. Q: Is this master schedule challenging to create? A: Yes. The master schedule will need an administrator dedicated just to it in order to make the transition to an 8 period day. VHS has consultants through the XQ grant who can assist admin with the master schedule. RBV does not have those consultants and only has 3 APs so Rancho would need to use an AOSA while the RBV principal and AP create the master schedule.
