Carnevale Di Venezia - first held in 1268 (Mardi Gras) People wore masks to Carnivale parties and events. When wearing masks, they could go anywhere and do anything they wanted to, even if it was against the RULES of SOCIETY.
Mascareri - mask makers formed their own artists’ guild in 1436 Mariegola- set of rules for mask making to preserve quality and traditions
Materials for traditional Venetian Masks: • Paper-maché, molded leather, or plaster (Paris-craft) for base • Acrylic or oil paint • Gold or Silver Leaf • Beads, pearls, jewels, sequins • Sheet music scraps • Glitter • Feathers • Ribbon or lace • Dimensional Paint (“puff paint”) We’ll use PARIS-CRAFT for building and ACRYLIC paint for painting.

Volto Masks FULL face masks, Used for complete disguise
Mezzo-Volto Masks HALF face masks, used to make eating, drinking, and talking easier!
Commedia Dell’Arte Masks • For actors in Carnivale theater productions • Grotesque, exaggerated features • Mezzo-volto- actor’s mouth is free for speaking
Plague Masks • Use: Originally worn by doctors visiting Black Plague victims (“ Il Dattore ”) • Long beak-like nose held spices and potpourri so they wouldn’t smell sickness, dead people
Bauta Masks • Use: Worn by rich people for disguise when breaking society rules • Intimidating, covers whole face like a shield
Jester Masks • For festivities • Often use musical notes in designs • Mezzo or volto • Any appendages = very advanced building
Colombina Masks • Use: For Carnivale celebrations, most popular style • Mezzo-Volto (HALF face) style • Very ornate/uses lots of materials • Can be worn by tying with ribbon or held on a stick
Harlequin Pattern Colombina • Diamond pattern in alternating colors • Can be combined with other design elements to look more unique

Your Venetian Carnivale mask design requirements: • MEZZO-VOLTO Colombina style • ORIGINAL design (not an exact copy of one you’ve seen; synthesize ideas you see with your own) • At least 2 PAINT COLORS in the painted design pattern (NO 1- color designs) • At least 1 TEXTURAL ELEMENT (embellishment) • LABELS showing all embellishments and attached materials (glitter, feathers, etc.) • Your sketch must be followed EXACTLY for the remainder of the project. You may not change the design after the sketch has been approved and graded.
