  3. • The NRC would like to express appreciation to JNES and IAEA for the leadership shown in the development and implementation of the IAEA Tsunami EBP. • The NRC further appreciates the opportunity to partner with IAEA and JNES in this important, successful and highly impactful effort. 3

  4. NRC Contributions to the IAEA Tsunami EBP • Financial support • Participation and support of a team of US tsunami and regulatory experts from NRC, NOAA and the USGS • NOAA ComMIT software and training • Writing support for DS417 • Cooperation on external events notification system 4

  5. NRC Contributions to the IAEA Tsunami EBP • In-kind participation – NRC tsunami regulatory reviewers provided insight on approaches to regulation – Experts on tsunami modeling software and techniques assisted with troubleshooting – Experts on implementing tsunami warning systems providing input and participation on external events notification systems 5

  6. NRC Contributions to the IAEA Tsunami EBP • In-kind participation – Sharing of research results (e.g. USGS report on tsunami sources in Atlantic) – Steering committee participation – Developers and trainers of the ComMIT system 6

  7. NRC Contributions to the IAEA Tsunami EBP • In-kind support of experts assistance with the update of tsunami guidance in DS417 (hydrologic and meteorologic experts were also provided through other interfaces). • Collaborative support on implementation of tsunami warning system and NEIC earthquake notifications in ISSC incident response operations through IAEA/USGS/ NRC/NOAA project 7

  8. NRC Contributions to the IAEA Tsunami EBP • NOAA ComMIT training – 16 participants from 5 countries. – Held in Korea and sponsored by NOAA, KAERI (local hosts), NRC, and IAEA. – Training on publicly available tsunami hazard assessment and tsunami warning interface available to all Member States. – Upcoming ComMIT training for NRC Staff to invite IAEA Member State Participants through the IAEA ISSC. 8

  9. ComMIT • Uses the NOAA seismic source database & NOAA Servers through publically available ComMIT interface • Couples with site specific bathymetry to produce high end seismically-induced tsunami hazard assessment

  10. ComMIT • USGS sources in NRC report have all been incorporated (e.g. Lisbon, Caribbean, etc.) • Couples with NEW US National Tsunami Warning system for site-specific run-up

  11. DART buoy feedback in warning system refines source & increases prediction accuracy Warning System w/ ComMIT • New critical user software in development • NRC to help develop and beta test new software • Implementation in NRC incident response center • Coordinating both seismic and tsunami projects among IAEA/USGS/NOAA/NRC

  12. DART buoy feedback in warning system refines source & increases prediction accuracy Warning System w/ ComMIT • NRC to help develop and beta test new software • Implementation in NRC (tsunami staff and/or incident response center (along with ShakeCAST) • Coordinating both seismic and tsunami projects among IAEA/USGS/NOAA/NRC

  13. ShakeCAST • Publically available software trolls for new shakemaps • If found initiates program in-house • Performs assessments and notifies NRC staff if triggers are met • Provides info on likely shaking levels, possibility of OBE exceedances, etc.

  14. Possible topical areas for NRC support under ISSC • Workshop to achieve community input and consensus on PTHA in development • Tsunami PSA • Tsunami warning system implementation • Tsunami and Earthquake notification systems for critical users • Upcoming ComMIT training for NRC Staff to invite IAEA Member State Participants through the IAEA ISSC. 14
