U.S. Bike Route 1 Background • U.S. Bicycle Route System is a national network of public bike travel routes • Over 13,000 miles are rideable today • Intended for experienced on‐road riders already these roads • Partnership between Georgia Department of Transportation and the Coastal Regional Commission to apply for U.S. Bike Route designation • Anticipates and supports future development of the Coastal Greenway, a multi‐use off road path which follows the US 17 corridor City of Savannah / Sustainability Office/ U.S. Bike Route 1
U.S. Bike Route 1 Designation Benefits: • Identifies the route formally • Improve awareness and safety • Stimulate the local economy along the route • Assists with future state & federal funding to support the Coastal Greenway development and construction Ownership & Responsibility: • Local district GDOT office is responsible for installation and maintenance of wayfinding signage • No street treatments or maintenance required by municipalities as part of this bike route designation City of Savannah / Sustainability Office/ U.S. Bike Route 1
