Travel Smart… Travel Safe! A business traveller’s guide to staying healthy, safe and happy on the road….

 1. Use A Travel Agent Help in emergency when you NEED to get home Allows you to focus on what is important You do your job… they’ll do theirs Ensure your agent has a 24-hour help line Agents send you travel alerts re: cancellations, airline strikes, natural disasters, safety related issues (terrorist attack, political unrest)
2. Travel Insured Ensure you have your free Guard.me medical coverage (if you use them) Reminder of 24 hour mental health support Program representative (ie: Jamie) number in your phone Carry your card with you
Ensure your passport is valid for 6 months to 1 year depending on where you go Note that Nexus can be renewed up to one year in advance (current wait time is over three months) 3. Research & Confirm entry visa requirements Plan Visit www.travel.gc.ca/travelling/advisories to see if there are any alerts Ensure you have the correct travel adapter Confirm currency, anticipate cash required and bring with it with you (don’t assume you can easily obtain in country) Know which apps, websites etc are accessible in that country (ie China many things won’t work like DropBox, Google, Facebook) Research dress codes in the country you’re in so you aren’t over/underdressed Utilize the hotel concierge: nearest convenience store? What can I do with my free time? Safe areas/routes to walk or run? Pack a perfect carry-on – ensure you have one outfit and everything you need to look your best
 4. Travel with • Colleagues Liaise well in advance to find out where your colleagues are going Book the same flights/hotels Share transportation costs Safety in numbers Companionship… travel depression is real Excellent Pro-D opportunity
5. Transportation Overseas Know expected cost and length of trip from airport to hotel (contact concierge via email for advice) Use Google or Maps.Me to determine travel timeframe for appointments (not always reliable so leave extra time) Hotel car, taxis, ride sharing or public transit.. what’s best? Consider hotel car if arriving late at night, in a new country or if travelling alone
 5. Transportation Overseas Take hotel card before leaving hotel to show a taxi driver or if you need to call for help Utilize concierge to advise safe taxi options and travel times Ensure the meter is turned on the taxi Ask in advance if the taxi takes credit card
