Golden Rules 1) Never Be Alone With a Young Person • Never be alone with a child • Remain in open spaces • Always take a buddy • Remain within earshot and/or eyesight • Remove yourself from situation • Look out for each other
Golden Rules 2) If You See Something, Say Something • If you see something that you SUSPECT may be in breach of a child’s safety, you must report it immediately to your supervisor • If you see a colleague behaving in a way that may be misconstrued, you are obliged to say something
Remember: What is Child Abuse? • Verbal abuse • Emotional abuse • Psychological or physical abuse • Physical punishment • Withdrawal of necessities of care All suspected child abuse and allegations must be reported immediately to your supervisor and external authorities Remember: Immediate risk = 000, Suspected risk of abuse = local Police/DHS)
Golden Rules 3) Appropriate Physical & Emotional Boundaries • No unnecessary physical contact • Avoid personal/private direct communications with children or young people, e.g. Don’t be friends on Social Media • Avoid using personal camera or video camera equipment in the workplace. • Avoid contact with YMCA’s children and young people outside of the workplace. • Avoid transporting children and young people alone • Report any pre-existing relationships
