What is an Internship? 2 A student or recent graduate undergoing supervised training to enhance employability and skills. The Free Dictionary Internship Work Experience • All levels • Level 3 only (Technical Baccalaureate, Ext. Diploma, A-levels) • Usually during course • Between study years • One day per week or short block • Full-time minimum 4 – 6 weeks • Non-specific general introduction to work • Project-based designed by employer • Limited structure • Structured to complete project • Not usually paid • Paid • Not advertised • Advertised post • Not usually a specific Job Description • Job Description • Selected by college • Selected by employer The Young Consultants 23 February 2014
The Young Consultants’ Model 2 A period of full-time project-based work designed by the employer to meet a specific business need • Timescales agreed Internship • Project specification designed – possibly collaboratively with college • Job Description released Pre-Internship • Students apply through standard application process • Interviews take place for selection • Successful candidate/s informed • Project carried out in the workplace on a full-time basis over the agreed duration of the Internship Project-based • Internship monitored by College through regular meetings (fortnightly) • Progress review undertaken between supervisor and College Internship • On completion of the Internship The Young Consultant will be required to present the outcomes of the project to an invited audience agreed by the Project employer • The quality of the presentation will contribute to the overall grade awarded Presentation for the internship The Young Consultants 23 February 2014
Progress to-date 3 All colleges enjoy a mutually beneficial relationship with a range of employers that they serve. It is hoped that ‘The Young Consultant’s’ programme will significantly enhance the service that colleges can provide for local employers. Last year successful internships were completed in companies such as: Lloyds TSB AstraZeneca Wight Salads Young Stars sports camps And in the following industries Hotels, marketing, computing The Young Consultants 23 February 2014
