What is the TA Mentorship Program? • The TA Mentorship program offers discipline-specific support in teaching and learning • The program employs experienced TAs who act as mentors, passing on their knowledge, skill and sense of professionalism
Program Information • Currently in its 4 th year – First at the EDC (originally at FGPA) • Replaces a traditional TAship – 10 hrs per week – Content directed by the department/EDC – Supervised by the EDC
What do Mentors do? • Promote teaching and learning to TAs • Observe and provide feedback on tutorials, discussion groups and labs • Lead microteaching sessions to identify strengths and challenges of their TAs • Facilitate workshops • Mentor TAs through challenging situations • Direct TAs to proper resources • Foster a sense of community in the department
Examples of Activities • Departmental Orientations • Carleton Teaching Events – September – December – January – April • Research on teaching and learning
Support for Mentors • TA Mentors are provided – Extensive training at the start of each term (August & January) – Training sessions throughout the term – Resource Binders from past Mentors – Resources from EDC – Support from other TA Mentors
