  4. • Subbing • Corporal Punishment • Outside Work • Transportation • Conduct- Be polite during faculty meetings and in-service, even if others around you are being rude. • Dress - at or above dress code

  8. Other S.T. Policies • Student teaching is your priority (not coaching, etc.) Line up child care options if needed. • Submit lessons plans to your CT and/or your supervisor prior to implementation and on time. • Avoid gossip. Be friendly. Smile. Respect everyone, especially the custodian and secretary :)

  9. Four Components of S.T. Required by State of TN • Observation – During first few days of S.T. • Participation - Jump in immediately. Be enthusiastic! • Full Teaching - The CT decides, but establish good communication about your needs. • Co-Curricular – Participate during your placement. Your CT may be involved in groups/clubs, etc. that you can learn from.

  10. How soon and how long will I actually teach? • Typically, you observe for approx. one week or maybe just a bit longer. • Usually begin teaching one or two subjects by 2 nd week. By 3 rd week you may begin full-time teaching of all subjects or class periods. Maybe sooner! • Teach as much and for as long as your CT will let you. You need the experience! • “ Team Teaching ” - Occasionally, CT ’ s may be requiring you to work as a “ team ” rather than completely turning over their classroom to the student teacher. It ’ s O.K.  (Mostly during Spring term.)

  11. Important Points about Terminating a Placement • The student teacher is responsible for compliance with all student teaching policies. • If you feel that you need to drop student teaching, contact me early. • If a school system requests your removal, we do so immediately. • Student teachers may be terminated for unsatisfactory progress or violation of policies or regulations.

  12. Cooperating Teachers • Selected by the principal • Suggestions are not requirements for CT ’ s. • Assist your CT with LiveText if needed. • We can’t make them observe you weekly, but we request that they do so.

  13. University Supervisors • Full-time or adjunct faculty of UTM • The U.S. assigns your final grades for student teaching with the input of cooperating teachers. • They will hold a mid-semester and a final seminar with you. • They observe and evaluate 4 times per semester. (More if necessary)

  14. The Principal • Part of the mentoring team • May drop in to evaluate you • Always looking for prospective teachers

  15. Coordinator of Field Placements • Placements • Policies • Procedures • Evaluation of the program

  16. Remediation: • Coordinator of Field Placements is notified and holds conference with S.T. – Explain problem – Document – Outline in writing how to rectify situation – Deadline for compliance • These are closely associated with removal from student teaching and failure to recommend.

  18. Tips for Great S.T. Experience – Be on time. – Dress appropriately. – Be flexible. – Follow the school rules. – Plan ahead. – The office staff is VERY important! – Maintain confidentiality. – DO NOT gossip. – Be professional at all times – Don ’ t wait until the last minute to call in sick. – Do not allow your students to call you by your first name. – Take restroom breaks whenever you can.
