A lack of digital skills disadvantages people in every part of society. WHAT IS IDEA ? The Duke of York Inspiring Digital Enterprise Award (iDEA) is a vocational programme helping people of all ages develop skills to enhance their chances on the job market. It is the digital and enterprise equivalent of The Duke of Edinburgh Award. It's completely free and accessible on any device. Earn iDEA digital badges anytime, anywhere you can get online.
WHAT IS IDEA ? The iDEA Bronze Award has four core skills categories: Citizen • Worker • Maker • Entrepreneur • Learning through iDEA’s online learning modules can be tailored to required skills and interests using the range of digital badges available. 250 points are needed for the Bronze Award. Learn new skills and understand the jargon: Cyber security, e-Safety, the Internet of Things, selling online, what is the cloud?, digital research, video editing, coding, graphic design, animation, amongst others.

FIRST BOROUGH TO ROLL OUT Strategic plan to roll out iDEA across Wigan Borough: IDEA Schools and colleges (both for • teachers and students) Council staff • Apprentices • Digitally excluded residents • Digitally included residents • Businesses • Broaden understanding of digital, gain some basic skills and gain confidence.
ACTIVITY TO DATE • System briefing to heads of all schools, colleges and governors • Wigan and Leigh College 120 student volunteers piloting • Engaged with Wigan UTC (University Technical College) • Shevington & Cansfield High Schools piloted iDEA in summer 2017 • Digital Taskforce partners are working with schools looking to build in delivery • Consulted with Youth Cabinet for feedback and ideas • Met with Wigan Youth Zone who have started to roll out iDEA with Enterprise students • Met with youth worker colleagues and volunteer co-ordinators to look at how iDEA could be used for young people and supporting volunteers that work with young people.
ACTIVITY TO DATE Wigan Council Apprentices: • 38 internal apprentice sessions held • 79 council apprentices have started to complete iDEA Badges • 50 council apprentices have achieved the iDEA Bronze Award • More sessions in the diary in 2018 Media College are a council partner for apprenticeships. Looking at opportunities particularly as their courses have a digital focus. Met with National Careers Service to look at how iDEA could be used as a learning tool. WIGAN BADGE A Wigan badge has been developed to help monitor the roll out of iDEA across Wigan Borough All partners must use the code at delivery sessions Wigan are also going to be using Organiser Codes iDEA is accrediting partner activities such as learning events and workshops, so that points can be obtained towards the Bronze Award in recognition of events attended. TEACHER AND HEAD OF CAREERS – “We engaged with iDEA for all our Y7 -9 students in their Personal Development lesson. We found that the students IAN enjoyed doing the award, especially building up the points. IT’S ABOUT STAGE, NOT iDEA is for everyone, young people and adults alike. AGE Bronze is beginner level, Silver intermediate and Gold advanced. The iDEA bite size badges are very flexible – you can do them with your friends, on your own, or in classroom, workshop or club environments.
IT’S ABOUT OPENING UP OPPORTUNITI The challenges are split into core categories, each with their own ES set of badges. As well as being fun, the badges provide a visual acknowledgment of achievement which can then lead to increased employment marketability in the technology and enterprise sectors.
