Background • Idea first identified – South Link Alternatives Analysis Transit Study – MPO South Dade Managed Lanes Study • MDX, MPO and MDT recognized a need and an an opportunity – Optimize transit service and bus travel time – Improve safety bus operations on the Busway – Maximize usage of existing excess roadway capacity and right of way – Mitigate congestion on the US ‐ 1 and traversing streets – Provide possible funding for future transportation improvements
Background • US ‐ 1 Express project identified in MDX’s 2035 Vision Plan • MDX to lead a Project Development and Environmental Study (PD&E) in close coordination with Miami ‐ Dade Transit and Florida Department of Transportation – Comprehensive analysis includes public outreach, financial analysis, transit analysis, engineering and environmental
What does the project consist of? • Use extra capacity of the South Dade Busway to incorporate managed lanes – Manage demand by variable toll pricing (I ‐ 95 Express) • Continue toll ‐ free bus corridor • Charge private cars a toll – Evaluate improvements that can improve bus service – Provide free flow option and improve US ‐ 1 traffic – Provide linkage to Palmetto and US ‐ 1 – Preserve envelope for future premium transit
