  1. The role and potential of new incar- technologies Josef Krems & Tibor Petzoldt Technische Universität Chemnitz Germany Technische Universität Chemnitz, Germany Overview 1. New technologies (ADAS/IVIS) 2 2. Th The potential and limits of ADAS t ti l d li it f ADAS 3. Alcolocks? 1

  2. Here and now – 120 years later  WORLDWIDE: 1.24 million deaths and 15 million serious injuries million serious injuries annually (Global Road Safety Partnership) per year  2nd leading cause of death for young men death for young men worldwide (behind HIV/AIDS)  EUROPE: 30,000 fatalities per year Road deaths per 100.000 population (WHO, 2013) 2

  3. So…  What can we do to reduce fatalities? 1 1. Passive Safety Passive Safety  Everything that helps minimize the effects of accidents (airbag, belt, construction of the vehicle etc.) 2. Active Safety  Everything that helps to aviod accidents (ABS, ESP, Collision Avoidance, etc.)  New technology: information, assistance, automation IVIS & ADAS IVIS = Intelligent Driver Information System  inform and entertain the user while driving  air condition control  radio control  Navigation  … ADAS = Advanced Driver Assistance System  explicitly supports the driver with their driving task  lane control  distance control  night vision  Collision avoidance  … 3

  4. Overview: ADAS today Level System Anti-lock braking system Stabilizing Stabilizing Electronic Stability Control (ESC) Adaptive Cruise Control ACC Stop-and-Go Manouvers Parking assistance Lane-departure warning Collision avoidance Nightvision assistance Navigation Navigationsystems 7 Overview 1. New systems (ADAS/IVIS) 2 2. Th The potential and limits of ADAS t ti l d li it f ADAS 3. Alcolocks? 4

  5. In Europe The benefit of ADAS  ESP: From 1.11.2014 mandatory for all new cars: 15- 20 % decrease of fatalities (eSafety database)  Collision avoidance: Avoidance of 12% of very serious  Collision avoidance: Avoidance of 12% of very serious accidents (GDV)  Collision avoidance on trucks: Avoidance of 40% of very serious accidents 5

  6. But, there are limits…  Loose of skill and competence  Overreliance Overreliance  From control to monitoring including reduced situation awareness  Loose of activation and vigilance because of monoticity  Attending to other tasks because of additional ressources  Misuse  Only for the rich…  … Limits of IVIS and ADAS  Society  Training, education, licence  T i i d ti li  Data protection  responsibility  Manufacturers  reliability  ADAS and IVIS are considered as comfort issues  resposibility  Drivers:  Workload and distraction  Vigilance (out-of-the-loop)  Degrees of freedom... 6

  7. Overview 1. New systems (ADAS/IVIS) 2 2. Th The potential and limits of ADAS t ti l d li it f ADAS 3. Alcolocks? Pros and cons  Alcolocks will decrease „drink and drive“  Might be a serious option to avoid repeat offense  Driving without driver license in a period of  Driving without driver license in a period of rehabilitation But:  Drinking to the limit  Can be misused  C b i d  Low acceptance rate from „target groups“ 7

  8. To sum up…  ADAS/IVIS and also Alcolocks have the potential to increase safety  More information better assistance higher  More information, better assistance, higher automation will not solve all the problems  The driving task will change and new problems will arise Thank you for your attention 8
