Southern Alberta Fisheries Habitat Enhancement and Sustainability Program (FISHES) The Riparian Restoration Side of the Story November 2, 2018
Today’s Presentation 1. A brief overview of the FISHES Program 2. 2018 FISHES riparian restorations works: • Threepoint Creek • Silvester Creek • Bow River • Other FISHES Sites in the Eastern Slopes
About the Southern Alberta FISHES Program • The FISHES Program is a multi-million dollar program developed after the 2013 flood event, to provide mitigation for emergency works that were exempt from considering environmental impacts. • A science-based approach was developed and used to determine where best to complete habitat restoration projects at flood impacted sites. • Resulting habitat restoration projects were designed and constructed to: – Mitigate flood-related impacts – Speed the restoration of degraded habitat following the 2013 and 2014 floods – Enhance fish habitat to improve resiliency to future high flow events
“Overview Summary” literature and relevant/known database review to support decision- making “Preliminary Assessment” HD Videography during helicopter flights – collect FISHES watershed data and score using ESRM Monitoring and Evaluation Planning “Detailed Field S urveys” Framework to collect required biotic/abiotic habitat data and score using ESRM Data analysis using the Construction of Projects Evaluation Scoring and Tendering, Contractor Hire Ranking Model (ESRM) and Construction Prioritization of reaches and habitat units; provides Design Stage limiting factors in system Consultant lead Conceptual, Preliminary and Final Designs; Environmental Permitting
Habitat Issues Common Among Projects • Bank Instability – Flood and Anthropogenic Disturbances • Riparian Disturbances – Trails and roads – Campsites and other clearings • Crossings – OHV crossings – Cattle and wildlife crossings • Instream Disturbances – Channel migration – Excessive gravel deposits – Anthropogenic debris Silvester Creek Instream and Riparian Disturbance – OHV travel instream
