Positive Aspects of Group Decision Making  Working with a group may enhance the quality of information in making a decision.  If one person isn’ t familiar with the subj ect, another person in the group might be.  Bouncing ideas off of each other leads to further thinking and creativity.  Decisions made in a group are more likely to be understood.  People tend to be more committed to their decisions while discussing in a group.

Negative Aspects of Group Decision Making  One person might dominate the discussion which would defeat the purpose of a group decision.  S atisficing may happen if time is rushed and group members don’ t put in enough effort.  A phenomenon called Groupthink may occur when group members shy away from voicing an alternative view on something.  Goal displacement might happen when disagreements cause distractions resulting in new goals.

Group Decision Making in College  Working in a group for a class proj ect is comparable to working with employees at a company.  The group has to decide on a topic to research and how to break the topic down into smaller categories.  It is important that everyone in the group is on the same page in order to construct a good looking presentation and be knowledgeable on the subj ect.

Group/ Team Decision Making Can Work  The group leader should keep everyone focused on the task and allow everyone to voice their opinions.  Disagreements should be dealt with using the methods of devil’s advocate (criticizing ideas) and the process of dialectic (a structured debate).  Group leaders should allow brainstorming in order to build creative freedom.
