Library & Research Service • Responsible for providing information and research services to support the work of both Houses, Committees and individual Members in respect of their parliamentary duties • Other functions include FoI, Records Management & Documents Laid
Who we are – the staff of the L&RS • 37 Staff –including 7 Librarians and 21 researchers. • Subject specialisms - law, social science, economics, political science, environmental science, public administration, information management • Backgrounds are diverse- corporate, academic, professional & public sector experience
L&RS services • Legislative Analysis Service (e.g. Bills Digests and Trackers) • Research publications (Spotlights, L&RS Notes and Infographics) • On demand research queries including article/book requests • Research for Committees • Information resources such as books and journals (some on EU), online databases (e.g. Westlaw legal database which has info on EU case law) and docs laid • Posts (sent by email) on hot topics e.g. Brexit, report releases • Information skills training –full programme currently being designed • Media and news monitoring services (Factiva, Irish Times, FT)
Alerting Service • Docs laid weekly listing – Docs laid alert – links and context on new documents which have been laid before the Houses • New Book Alerts – Alerts sent out by email when a number of new items are added to our book catalogue • Factiva Newspaper Monitoring – daily alerts to your Inbox with today’s news on specific topics (e.g. alerts on a particular TD or Senator, EU news from Eur-Lex, EurActiv etc, FT’s Brussels briefing.) • Topical posts – Links to important and timely documents – when you need them – Subscribe (Via the L&RS page on the Plinth) to receive these alerts!
Future plans • Information Skills – An online survey is underway and has been circulated to all political staff – responses are due back tomorrow (2 nd June) – This will help us better plan a training programme of courses/guides/seminars etc. with maximum benefit for staff • Private Member Bills – We are looking at how we can best help Members and their staff with PMBs
