The International Museum of Surgical Science (IMSS) The Mission of the Museum is to enrich people’s lives by enhancing their appreciation and understanding of the history, development and advances in surgery and related subjects in health and medicine.
Museum History • Mansion built in 1917 by Eleanor Robinson Countiss • After Eleanor’s death in the 1930’s, the family sold the property which was bought by the International College of Surgeons. • The Museum began as the Surgeon’s Hall of Fame in 1954.
Museum Collection Over 20,000 artifacts! • Collection covers over 5,000 years of history • Library contains over 4,000 volumes from the 16 th – 18 th centuries • 600 paintings, prints & sculptures • 650 letters and papers from prominent figures in medical history
Museum Attendance The Museum receives visitors from all over the world! • Around 30,000 visitors per year - and growing!
Educational Programs • Over 3,500 students annually – K-8 th grades thru High school – College students – Senior groups – Adult groups including Architects, Artists and Medical Professionals • Volunteers needed for guided docent tours, large group facilitation help, and other school day activities!

Museum Membership The Museum has over 200 members! • Volunteers receive complimentary Museum Individual Membership after 3 months of service • All memberships include ASTC reciprocity – over 200 science and technology centers around the world!
Volunteering at IMSS • Minimum of 10 hours per Docent/Education month and six month Front Desk & Visitor commitment • Shifts are available every day Service of the week 10am – 5pm, Public Program and during evening programs Guide • Volunteer hours are tracked using the Collections and YourVolunteers.com system Library Workshops • Yearly recognition party!
